Conservative Selection Policy Raises Questions
England’s head coach, Charlotte Edwards, announced a squad for the upcoming home T20 World Cup starting on 12 June that closely mirrors the team which lost the Ashes 15 months ago. This decision has drawn criticism for its lack of change despite previous poor results.
Edwards and her selection panel have maintained a conservative approach over the past year. Last summer, the only notable change was the exclusion of Kate Cross, who missed the Ashes due to injury. Em Arlott was the sole new cap awarded, and she was also the only new player in the squad taken to India in October.
Some early signs of a generational shift appeared when Surrey wicketkeeper Kira Chathli and Essex all-rounder Jodi Grewcock were included in the ODI squad against New Zealand in May. However, neither will participate in the World Cup as the squad had already been finalized and submitted to the ICC.
England’s lineup for the World Cup includes Sophia Dunkley and Danni Wyatt-Hodge opening the batting, with Alice Capsey, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Heather Knight forming the middle order. Amy Jones is the designated wicketkeeper, with Capsey as her reserve despite limited experience keeping wickets professionally. Spin bowling duties are assigned to Sophie Ecclestone and Charlie Dean, with either Lauren Bell or Lauren Filer expected to take wickets during the powerplay.
This selection closely resembles previous squads, reinforcing perceptions of an unchanging core group of players.
Edwards responded to criticism by emphasizing differences from the Ashes squad, highlighting the inclusion of Dani Gibson and Freya Kemp, who have shown increased confidence and belief.
“It’s a very different side to the one that walked out in the last game of the Ashes,” Edwards said. “Especially Dani Gibson and Freya Kemp: we’ve seen a real confidence build in those players. A real belief.”
Edwards also noted that 19-year-old batter Davina Perrin, who impressed during the Hundred semi-final last August, was considered for selection but was ultimately not included due to the lack of an opening spot and the need for a versatile batter on the bench.
“She hasn’t had as much exposure to other places in the order. You need quite a versatile batter on the bench,” Edwards explained.
The statistics from England’s intra-squad series in Pretoria in March support Edwards’s decisions. The top run-scorers were Dunkley, Capsey, and Wyatt-Hodge. Perrin batted three times in five matches, scoring 37 runs with a highest score of 18.
Despite this, some argue that at a time when England is searching for a breakthrough player akin to Ellie Kildunne, it might have been worthwhile to take a chance on Perrin, a teenager capable of extraordinary innings.

There is a widespread belief that certain players remain undroppable regardless of England’s performance in global tournaments or Ashes series. This squad selection does not challenge that notion. Three players—Heather Knight, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Danni Wyatt-Hodge—have participated in every World Cup across all formats since 2013, yet collectively have not secured a trophy. Expecting different outcomes with the same core group may seem unreasonable, yet the selectors persist.
The hopes for a new generation rest on 18-year-old left-arm spinner Tilly Corteen-Coleman, the only uncapped player in the squad. Her enthusiasm upon selection reflects the passion that Edwards values.
“I’ve been on cloud 9 ever since,” Corteen-Coleman said, illustrating her excitement.
Her attitude echoes Edwards’s own experience as a teenager called up during the amateur era, demonstrating humility and eagerness to learn.
“Whether I’m on the pitch or running drinks, it will be a massive learning opportunity,” Corteen-Coleman said. “I’m going to be try to be the best water girl I can be.”
Corteen-Coleman faces competition for a place from Linsey Smith, the vice-captain, Charlie Dean, and Sophie Ecclestone, ranked world No. 2. Her humility contrasts with some teammates and highlights the challenge of securing a spot in the squad.
