Sunday's round-up
Under the overcast skies of Leeds and beneath the bright floodlights, Yorkshire’s Harry Brook took on the role of bowler with remarkable effect, dismantling Surrey’s top order, which was already under significant pressure after following on.
From the Howard Stand end, Brook delivered fast, swinging deliveries that troubled the batsmen. He first dismissed Ryan Patel, who edged a catch to cover, then bowled his England teammate Jamie Smith. Adam Thomas was next, caught at point after a confident shot. A potential fourth wicket was missed when Jonny Bairstow failed to hold a catch from Josh Blake. In just 15 minutes, Brook (three for 11) had doubled his first-class wicket tally at Headingley.
In the interim, Rory Burns was caught behind off a sharp delivery from White, and Dan Lawrence was bowled by Matthew Revis after playing the ball into his pads. Rain interrupted play, with Dom Sibley the resilient batsman on 33, despite being struck to the ground by Jhye Richardson. Surrey, having been outplayed by George Hill in their first innings, require 200 runs to compel Yorkshire to bat again.
Essex secured victory in the first match of the round at Chelmsford following a flurry of wickets. On a pitch made challenging by overnight rain, Leicestershire were bowled out for 60, with Sam Cook taking four wickets for 19 runs and Shane Snater also claiming four for 12. Extras contributed eight runs. Essex faced some resistance but ultimately chased down the target of 101, thanks to contributions from Matt Critchley and Charlie Allison.
At Lord’s, Derbyshire’s win over Middlesex was delayed by Leus du Plooy’s innings of 95 runs. Hampshire remained competitive against Nottinghamshire through Sonny Baker’s five-wicket haul. Paul Coughlin’s quickfire 50 runs for Lancashire against Worcestershire added excitement at Southport. Daniel Hughes’ century for Sussex against Somerset was a highlight of a day marked by intermittent play at Taunton. Ethan Bamber’s 46 runs and three wickets in 17 balls gave Warwickshire hope after Glamorgan’s young bowler Tom Norton took four wickets.
At Beckenham, water leaking beneath the covers prevented play, leaving Ben Stokes to engage in an extended net session, which was the main activity for spectators.
Good morning! Yesterday saw wickets fall from unexpected quarters, notably from the impressive Harry Brook of Yorkshire. There is much to watch today as the final match of this Championship block commences at 11am. Join us for live updates.
