Australia Clinches Series with Nine-Wicket Victory in St Kitts

Australia secured a dominant nine-wicket win over the West Indies to complete a series sweep in the third and final ODI held in St Kitts. The visitors chased down the target of 136 with ease, finishing at 137 for 1.

Leg-spinner Alana King was the standout performer, delivering a remarkable bowling spell of 5 wickets for 19 runs across 10 overs. Her performance dismantled the West Indies batting lineup after a promising start, restricting them to 135 all out.

Australia’s openers, Phoebe Litchfield and Ellyse Perry, guided the chase confidently. Litchfield remained unbeaten on 68 from 56 balls, while Perry contributed an unbeaten 33, ensuring the target was reached comfortably in under 20 overs.

King’s Impactful Bowling Performance

King’s 5 for 19 marked her second-best figures in women’s one-day internationals, following her exceptional 7 for 18 at the World Cup last year. The 32-year-old leg-spinner concluded the Caribbean tour with 11 wickets across six white-ball matches, including five wickets from three T20 games after her return to the T20 squad.

“We were just very clinical, we nailed our lengths, we really owned that,” King said.
“For me to reap the rewards was great, but I think the whole bowling unit really did an incredible job and held a very destructive West Indian side to about 140 [135], which was very pleasing.”

West Indies Batting Struggles

West Indies captain Hayley Matthews won the toss and opted to bat first. Matthews and opener Deandra Dottin provided a solid start, putting on 38 runs for the first wicket, with Dottin scoring 22.

However, the momentum shifted when Australia’s stand-in captain Tahlia McGrath introduced King as the fifth bowler. King quickly made an impact, dismissing Matthews for 34 after the opener failed to handle the extra bounce and edged a drive to Georgia Voll at cover.

Shortly after, young allrounder Jannillea Glasgow was caught by Georgia Wareham for a duck, leaving the West Indies struggling at 78 for five.

Chinelle Henry (40 not out) and Realeanna Grimmond (20) provided some resistance, helping the hosts reach a more respectable total before King struck again.

King completed her third five-wicket haul in ODIs by dismissing Afy Fletcher, caught at slip, and Karishma Ramharack, caught by Voll at long-on. Off-spinner Ash Gardner supported the effort by taking 2 wickets for 29 runs to finish off the tail.

Australia’s Swift Chase

Australia’s openers began the chase aggressively. Georgia Voll contributed 23 runs before being caught in the deep off Ashmini Munisar’s bowling. By this point, Australia had already scored 50 runs inside nine overs, making the outcome clear.

Perry and Litchfield accelerated the innings to ensure a comfortable victory for the tourists.

Looking Ahead

Following their successful ODI series, Australia will now focus on the upcoming T20 World Cup in England scheduled for June. The team will play three T20 matches against South Africa as preparation ahead of the tournament.
