Her deterioration followed a physical altercation with two younger eagles in mid-July, according to the Los Angeles Times. Veterinarians reported that tests showed severe anaemia and inflammation affecting her kidneys, and according to Tech Times, she received a blood transfusion from another eagle named Spirit during her treatment. The Ojai Raptor Center said in a statement:
Over the past several days, her condition continued to deteriorate despite intensive treatment and the combined efforts of our veterinary team and consulting specialists.
Staff at the center said oxygen therapy, supportive treatment and continuous intensive-care monitoring were unable to reverse her decline, according to KEYT.
Who was Jackie to online audiences?
Jackie hatched in the spring of 2012 and had been paired with her mate, Shadow, since 2018. The two eagles nested in a Jeffrey pine overlooking Big Bear Lake, a site that has been streamed live since Friends of Big Bear Valley, a California nonprofit, installed a webcam there in 2015. The Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam built a devoted following, and according to USA Today, its YouTube audience had grown to roughly 820,000 rs by the time of her death.
