Police seek fugitive convicted of 2023 murder after escape from day release

Police are searching for Gary Anderson, 29, who failed to return from day release at Maghaberry prison. He was convicted of murdering Karol Kelly in 2023 and remains at large.

Police are appealing for information to locate Gary Anderson, a 29-year-old prisoner who is currently unlawfully at large after failing to return from day release.

Anderson is one of two men convicted in connection with the murder of Karol Kelly in 2023. He had been granted day release from Maghaberry prison on Monday but did not return as required.

Description and appeal

According to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), Anderson is approximately five feet 11 inches tall, of slim build, and has brown hair.

"As of this time, Gary - who is approximately five feet 11 inches tall, of slim build and with brown hair - has still not returned to prison or been apprehended,"
the PSNI stated in their appeal.

Authorities are urging Anderson directly to surrender himself to police.

"We appeal directly to Gary to hand himself in."

Public safety warning

The PSNI has cautioned members of the public against approaching Anderson directly if they encounter him or become aware of his location. Instead, anyone with information about his whereabouts is encouraged to contact police immediately.
