A mum-of-four died after being stabbed in the back following a fight near Newport city centre, an inquest opening has heard. Charlene Dowsell, 41, died on 18 July following an altercation in the street.
What did the court hear?
Gwent Coroner's Court heard police were called at 01:37 BST and told
“a male and female were fighting at St Vincent Road and the female was bleeding”. Dowsell was found a short distance away near Chepstow Road, and
“despite first aid”was pronounced dead at 03:15. She was later identified by her father.
Who has been charged?
Albert Williams, 66, of Ruperra Street, Newport, has been charged with murder.
What was the provisional cause of death?
A post-mortem examination gave a provisional cause of death as a stab wound to Dowsell's left back
“involving the lung, stomach and liver”.
Why was the inquest opened and then suspended?
Coroner Rose Farmer said she was opening an inquest as Dowsell had suffered a
“violent death”, but that it would be suspended due to criminal proceedings being carried out by Gwent Police.
The force previously said officers, including those with firearms, were called to an incident outside a property in St Vincent Road, with Dowsell found a short distance away near Chepstow Road.
Dowsell was previously described as the
“foundation”of the family, with a tribute saying it was
“heartbreaking”that her four children had been left
“without a mum”.
“You're at peace now our beautiful girl. Gone but never forgotten,”they said.
