The mother of nine-year-old Minnie Merriman, who died following a serious injury in Arbroath, has expressed her gratitude to residents of the town for the compassion they have shown her family during their darkest hours.
Minnie, originally from Wakefield in West Yorkshire, was discovered seriously injured at Elliot Industrial Estate on 3 August 2026 and was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where she later died from her injuries. Her father, Christopher Rice, faces a murder charge and remains in custody as the case progresses through the Scottish legal system.
In a heartfelt message shared on Facebook, Laurie Merriman described the support from the local community as transformative, stating that the generosity demonstrated by strangers and neighbours had profoundly affected her ability to cope with the tragedy.
A community united in grief
Hundreds of people gathered in Victoria Park in Arbroath the week following Minnie's death to pay their respects. A private ambulance carrying Minnie's body back to England was escorted through the town by motorcycle riders, while local residents lined the route with flowers, poems, and toys as tributes to the young girl.
The family had been camping in Arbroath when Minnie was injured, and she was transported to hospital along with three other family members. Following the Victoria Park gathering, which included the release of balloons, a piper led a procession alongside Minnie's family as they accompanied the ambulance away from the event.
Arbroath Football Club also paid tribute to Minnie with a minutes' silence held before their match against Inverness Caledonian Thistle on 8 August 2026, and the club provided shirts bearing Minnie's name to her younger brothers.

To the football club for your support and the Arbroath shirts for Minnie's little brothers, the family who gave us a place to stay when we needed it most, and for the giant chocolate gifts that brought a smile to the boys' little faces. I will never forget your kindness.
Laurie also acknowledged those who had made financial contributions, thanking everyone who had donated and assisted in raising funds in Minnie's memory.
