A 35-year-old man has been convicted of murdering a head teacher who was dragged beneath a vehicle for more than a mile after being struck while cycling home from work.

According to BBC News, Simon Richardson collided with Michael Mullins, aged 56, on the evening of 20 April in Warburton, a village in Greater Manchester. The prosecution presented evidence that Richardson abandoned the crash site before returning to attempt to free the injured cyclist, who remained trapped beneath the car, then continued driving with Mr Mullins still lodged underneath.

Richardson faced two additional convictions for dangerous driving. He is scheduled to return to Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court for sentencing on Monday, when he will learn his punishment.

The courtroom erupted with expressions of relief and emotion as the guilty verdict on the murder charge was announced. Members of the public gallery could be heard exclaiming in response, while others wept at the outcome.

Mrs Justice Brunner, the presiding judge, informed Richardson that murder carries a mandatory sentence: life imprisonment. She expressed her gratitude to the jury members, recognising that their deliberations throughout the trial "cannot have been easy" given the gravity and distressing nature of the evidence they had reviewed.

This case reflects a pattern of vehicle-related fatalities that have resulted in serious criminal convictions. Mohammed Azim was previously found guilty of murdering his girlfriend Lily Whitehouse by crushing her against a lamp-post with his van in Oldbury, West Midlands, and was later sentenced to life with a minimum of 20 years. In another case, two men were jailed for causing the deaths of a mother and four-year-old daughter in a high-speed crash in Leeds, with sentences of 12 and 16 years respectively.
