Why are wait times still so long?
The DVSA had initially set an ambitious target to reduce average waiting times to seven weeks by the end of the previous year. However, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander subsequently acknowledged that this goal was unachievable and postponed the deadline to summer 2026. Even with this extended timeline, the Transport Secretary has since conceded that the seven-week target will not be met until autumn 2025, citing sustained high demand and the complexity of implementing systemic reforms.
