Horse escape forces A3 closure in Surrey; road reopens after safe recovery

A horse that escaped onto the A3 near Wisley in Surrey prompted a temporary road closure on Tuesday morning. Driving instructor Michael Rose helped keep the animal safe using his van as a shield, while a separate three-vehicle collision injured one person.

A horse that escaped from a nearby field prompted a temporary closure of the A3 in Surrey on Tuesday morning, according to BBC News. The animal had entered the southbound carriageway near Wisley, forcing emergency services to intervene before the road could reopen. A separate three-vehicle collision occurred during the incident, resulting in one person being hospitalised with minor injuries.

Officers from Surrey Police responded to reports of the horse on the A3 at approximately 07:35 GMT on Tuesday. The animal had strayed onto the southbound carriageway near Wisley, close to Portsmouth Road. Emergency personnel from the South East Coast Ambulance Service and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene. The A3 has since reopened following the safe recovery of the animal to a nearby service station.

Driving instructor Michael Rose was travelling on the A3 at approximately 06:30 when he witnessed the incident unfold. He observed the horse galloping into the outside lane and became alarmed at the behaviour of other motorists.

"Unbelievably, some drivers were still trying to overtake it, so I felt I had to do something,"
Rose explained to BBC Radio Surrey. He deployed his van as a protective barrier between the animal and traffic, working alongside a recovery truck driver to keep the horse safely positioned at the roadside until emergency responders arrived.

How did the horse respond to the intervention?

Initially, the horse displayed signs of distress, but its demeanour changed once it had calmed down. Rose noted that the animal began grazing on the grass verge, suggesting it had become less agitated as the situation stabilised. His swift action and that of the recovery truck driver proved instrumental in preventing a potentially catastrophic outcome.

What safety concerns did the incident raise?

Rose expressed concern about the decisions made by some drivers during the emergency.

"It was disappointing to see drivers trying to pass the horse because these animals can move unpredictably and very quickly,"
he said. He emphasised the gravity of the situation, noting that
"The situation could easily have ended in a fatality for either the horse or a motorist."
His warning highlights the dangers posed when loose animals enter busy roadways and drivers fail to exercise appropriate caution.

The incident reflects broader concerns about animal welfare on major roads. Reports indicate that multiple horses were involved in the A3 incident, rather than a single animal, underscoring the scale of the emergency response required. Similar incidents have occurred on UK roads in recent years, including a serious collision on the A811 near Gartocharn in June 2026 when an 18-year-old was critically injured after a car struck loose cows, resulting in the deaths of two animals and the euthanasia of three others.

What happened to traffic during the closure?

The temporary road closure on the A3 southbound was necessary to allow emergency services to safely relocate the escaped horse. During this period, a separate three-vehicle collision took place on the same stretch of road. One person sustained minor injuries and received hospital treatment. The collision underscores how incidents involving loose animals can create cascading traffic hazards, as drivers may brake suddenly or attempt dangerous manoeuvres when encountering unexpected obstacles on the carriageway.
