A 75-year-old man convicted of dealing heroin has had more than £80,000 worth of his assets confiscated by authorities. Arthur Hughes, from Maes Bleddyn in Rachub, Gwynedd, received a 38-month prison sentence in June after being found guilty of possessing heroin with intent to supply and possessing criminal property.
According to BBC News, on 12 October at Caernarfon Crown Court, the total value of assets derived from Hughes' criminal activities was calculated at more than £151,730. North Wales Police confirmed that £82,401 in cash and criminal assets were seized and ordered to be forfeited to the state.
During the execution of a search warrant at Hughes' residence, officers discovered drugs and associated paraphernalia, which were subsequently ordered to be destroyed as part of the court's judgment.
How police pursue asset recovery
North Wales Police emphasised its commitment to dismantling the financial foundations of drug dealing operations. PC Jacob Swift stated that the force remains dedicated to targeting individuals who profit from drug distribution, utilising all available enforcement mechanisms to deprive criminals of assets accumulated through illegal activities.
This case reflects a broader pattern of law enforcement action against drug dealers across the UK. In September 2026, Charles McAughey was sentenced to six years for his involvement in a £8 million cocaine seizure, demonstrating that asset confiscation and custodial sentences are applied across different scales of drug trafficking operations. Similarly, in June 2026, Declan Price received over three years imprisonment after being caught with £300,000 worth of cocaine in Glasgow.
