Deadly Israeli Airstrikes in Southern Lebanon
Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of at least 19 individuals, including four women and three children, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. These strikes are part of near-daily exchanges between Israel and Hezbollah that have persisted despite a ceasefire.
Israel’s military did not immediately provide comments regarding the casualties or specific incidents. However, it stated that between Monday afternoon and Tuesday afternoon, it targeted more than 25 Hezbollah infrastructure sites in southern Lebanon.
Background of the Conflict
The latest round of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah began on 2 March, when the Lebanese militant group launched rockets at Israel, two days following US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
Casualties in Specific Locations
In Beirut, the government reported that a single strike on the village of Deir Qanoun al Nahr, located in the coastal Tyre province, killed 10 people, including three children and three women. Additionally, three individuals were wounded, among them a child.
The health ministry did not provide further details about this strike. However, the state-run National News Agency reported that the attack destroyed a house, leaving several people trapped under the rubble. Their bodies were recovered later in the day.
According to the ministry, another airstrike in the southern city of Nabatieh killed four people and wounded 10 others, including two women. A third strike in the nearby village of Kfar Sir resulted in five fatalities, including one woman.
Context of the Ongoing Conflict
The recent deaths occurred a day after the death toll in the current round of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah exceeded 3,000. This was two days after a US-brokered truce, effective since 17 April, was extended for an additional 45 days.
Israel has since launched an invasion into southern Lebanon and conducted bombardments in Beirut and other areas, stating that its operations target Hezbollah infrastructure. Hezbollah, a militant group and influential political organization in Lebanon, has resisted efforts to disarm, including pressure from the Lebanese government.
More than one million people have been displaced due to the conflict, with some seeking shelter in tents along roads and the Mediterranean Sea in Beirut.
Meanwhile, Israel continues to face frequent Hezbollah drone attacks targeting its troops stationed on Lebanese soil and in northern Israeli border towns.
Israeli Military Casualties
Israel’s military reported that one of its soldiers was killed on Tuesday during combat in southern Lebanon. This raises the total number of Israeli troop deaths to 21 since the latest conflict began.
