Interim President Announces Military Leadership Changes
Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, has announced the replacement of all senior military commanders, marking the latest in a series of significant changes following the dismissal of the long-serving defence minister closely aligned with former leader Nicolás Maduro.
Rodríguez shared the update via a social media post a day after she removed the defence minister and appointed a former intelligence chief as his successor.
“I announce the designation of the renewed military high command,” said Rodríguez on Thursday.
Rodríguez previously served as vice-president under Maduro, the left-wing authoritarian leader who was ousted during a U.S. special forces operation on January 3.
Challenges Facing Rodríguez’s Leadership
Under pressure from the United States, including threats of force, Rodríguez is tasked with governing a nation that holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves but suffers from a collapsing economy and widespread shortages of essential goods such as food and medicine.
In response to these challenges, she has implemented a historic amnesty law aimed at releasing political prisoners detained during Maduro’s administration. Additionally, she has revised oil and mining regulations to align with U.S. demands for access to Venezuela’s extensive natural resources.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that he effectively controls Venezuela’s government and is permitting Rodríguez to remain in power provided she complies with U.S. directives.
Balancing U.S. Expectations and Domestic Loyalties
Rodríguez occupies a delicate position, attempting to satisfy both the Trump administration and Venezuelans who remain loyal to Maduro, who, along with his wife, faces trial on U.S.-issued drug trafficking charges.
The Venezuelan military, which has pledged allegiance to Rodríguez, wields significant influence. It manages key sectors including oil, mining, food distribution, customs operations, and several government ministries. The military’s role has been scrutinized amid allegations of abuse and corruption.
