HBO Max Announces UK and Ireland Launch Date

HBO Max is set to enter the UK streaming market on 26 March, offering a range of subscription plans from £4.99 to £30.99 per month, the latter including access to TNT Sports. The service aims to attract rs by featuring popular titles such as Friends, which has been unavailable on UK streaming platforms since leaving Netflix at the end of 2025, alongside acclaimed series like Euphoria and the Harry Potter TV adaptation.

The platform will also introduce UK audiences to the US medical drama The Pitt, which won best drama awards at the Emmys and Golden Globes. The show will become available nearly 15 months after its US debut.

Content Lineup and Competition

HBO Max will compete with established streaming services including Netflix, Disney+, and Apple TV by offering a robust lineup of content. Upcoming releases include the DC series Lanterns, based on Green Lantern characters, scheduled for summer, and the Harry Potter TV series expected next year. The third season of Euphoria will premiere in April, with the third season of House of the Dragon anticipated later in 2024.

Existing popular HBO series such as Succession, The Sopranos, and Game of Thrones will also be available on the platform.

Partnership with Sky and Now

Previously, HBO content was accessible in the UK through Sky and its streaming service Now. While Now will continue to offer HBO programmes that began before the end of 2025, new HBO original productions will be exclusive to HBO Max.

An agreement between HBO Max and Sky will provide a membership bundle that includes both Now and HBO Max, with all current Now Entertainment rs automatically transitioned to the new bundle.

Tom Harrington, head of television at Enders Analysis, said there was "no way that Max could have successfully launched here without a deal with Sky", and that the agreement means HBO Max will be in more than 10 million households from launch.
"All the big continuing shows (House of the Dragon, Last of Us, White Lotus) will continue to be on Sky, so Max would be relying completely on new shows, especially Harry Potter, to grow a business from scratch," he said.
"On the content side, it's worth noting that HBO's hit rate is quite phenomenal - they don't release a lot but always have a few current shows with considerable cultural cut-through."

Additional Content and Sports Offerings

HBO Max's film offerings will include titles such as Superman, Oscar contenders One Battle After Another and Sinners, as well as A Minecraft Movie. Additionally, the platform will serve as the streaming home for TNT Sports, which holds broadcasting rights for the Premier League, FA Cup, Premiership rugby, UFC, and Grand Slam tennis.

Uncertain Future Amid Industry Changes

The long-term outlook for HBO Max remains uncertain. Its UK launch coincides with Netflix's pursuit of acquiring the streaming and film divisions of Warner Bros Discovery (WBD), HBO Max's parent company. Should Netflix succeed, it could result in the merging of HBO Max and Netflix into a single streaming service.

"Of course, the questions around WBD's future ownership makes the future of the service anyone's guess," Harrington said.
Analyst Mike Proulx of Forrester Research added: "If Netflix ends up making it through regulatory hurdles, both in the US and the UK, then it obviously will own HBO Max, and it is unclear as to the fate of that streaming service.
"Will it remain a separate, standalone streaming service that is operated by Netflix, similar to what Disney does with Hulu? Or will Netflix combine the IP of HBO Max into one mega Netflix streaming service? We don't yet know."
