Pokémon collector Grace Orton is preparing to queue at her local retailer on Wednesday to secure cards from the brand's most anticipated release in years. On 16 September 2026, The Pokémon Company will launch its 30th Celebration expansion in a simultaneous worldwide release, marking the first time the trading card game has rolled out globally on the same day. Industry figures and collectors are describing the event as the biggest moment for the franchise in a decade or longer.

The Japanese brand has established itself as one of the world's most recognisable franchises, with its distinctive creatures featured across video games, merchandise and retail outlets globally. Yet the trading card game—played, collected and traded for three decades—remains central to Pokémon's cultural identity and commercial success.

Gus Hall, proprietor of Evolution Games in Halifax, anticipates queues forming before shop doors unlock. A dedicated collector himself, Hall expressed his enthusiasm for the anniversary range.

If you want my personal opinion, I would say this is the biggest release for a good while for Pokémon. Some of the products and the cards they've leaked... are crazy.

Hall pointed to the dramatic appreciation in card values over the years. A box worth approximately £200 in the late 1990s would command around £35,000 in today's market. As a child, Hall spent roughly £1.99 of his pocket money on individual cards—a habit his parents viewed as wasteful. He now finds himself delivering the same message to parents in his store, though with a wry observation about who has ultimately benefited from the investment.

What makes Pokémon cards so valuable and appealing?

The enduring appeal of Pokémon cards stems partly from their non-electronic nature, Hall explained. Unlike digital entertainment, the physical trading card game fosters direct social interaction, friendship-building and strategic gameplay—elements parents often view favourably.

Pokémon is different to other things in society these days - there's nothing electronic in trading cards. Parents quite like it because it's healthy; it creates friendships and trading and gaming, and incorporates all these wonderful things that aren't detrimental to a child or young person's mind.

The satisfaction of completing a collection and pursuing specific cards within a set represents a core draw for enthusiasts. Hall described the moment of obtaining a sought-after card as

euphoric
.

Phoebe Watson, an employee at Evolution Games, has collected Pokémon cards for two decades. She expressed enthusiasm about acquiring cards from the anniversary range, particularly those featuring her favourite creatures.

It is going to be big. We get collectors in every single day, multiple times a day, and I've had hundreds of people ask me: 'When is the set dropping? Do you know how much you're getting?'.

Watson acknowledged realistic expectations: the initial release will likely sell out rapidly.

How has Pokémon's popularity changed in recent years?

The trading card hobby has experienced explosive growth over the past five years, according to Lee Glen, owner of Rocket's Hideout stores in York and Selby. Glen attributes much of this surge to the multi-generational appeal of collecting.

I got back into collecting five years ago with my son. It was something nostalgic that I used to do, and then got back into it with my son… You have sons, daughters, mums, everyone - and they can do it together.

Glen noted that Pokémon excels at reinventing its product offerings and successfully drawing lapsed collectors back into the hobby. His York location, typically closed on Wednesdays, will open specially for the anniversary launch to accommodate expected customer demand.

The multi-generational nature of collecting has been reinforced by broader Pokémon franchise developments. Pokémon Go celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2026 with over a billion downloads and millions of active players worldwide, demonstrating the franchise's sustained cultural reach across age groups and platforms.

Who is planning to buy anniversary cards?

Grace Orton, aged 21, intends to queue for the anniversary range despite acknowledging the difficulty of securing stock without arriving early. Though she began her collection only three years ago, Orton plans to invest substantially in the 30th Celebration set.

I'll definitely be trying at some point to get some. I know it'll be really difficult if I'm not [at a shop] immediately.

Orton cited the set's desirability and the quality of its artwork as motivations for her purchase.

It's such a big, sought-after set. A lot of the artwork is really nice; I really want some of it for my personal collection.

Ash Mehr, another enthusiast, began collecting between 20 and 30 years ago before taking a break from the hobby. He resumed collecting after his son developed an interest in Pokémon. Mehr described the anniversary release as carrying significant nostalgic weight.

I feel like I'm sort of dragging my son to these events to try and get the cards, but really it's a little bit of a guilty pleasure of mine! But hopefully, we'll get a good haul and get some good pulls [from the anniversary range].
It takes me back to being a kid, really, something I don't get to enjoy now as much in my early 40s.

What risks should collectors be aware of?

The high value of anniversary products has created opportunities for fraud and scams. Glen warned potential buyers to purchase exclusively from authorised national and independent retailers, steering clear of secondary markets where cards may be resold at two or three times their original price.

Just research and know what to spend. If it looks too cheap, chances are it is… because of the desirability of a product, people will always try and copy [them]. Do your homework.

Security concerns extend beyond point-of-sale transactions. Small UK card retailers have reported systematic postal theft targeting high-value shipments, with thieves intercepting mail-order deliveries as Pokémon card values reach record highs, forcing some businesses to suspend online sales temporarily.

What happens next?

The 30th Celebration expansion launches on 16 September 2026 with multiple product offerings available simultaneously. The Pokémon Company has indicated that additional anniversary-related products will continue releasing throughout the remainder of 2026 beyond the initial launch day, extending the celebration period for collectors unable to secure stock immediately.
