Tom Holland is on course to earn at least $100m for his role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, according to unnamed sources described as having knowledge of the British actor's contract. The figure combines a reported $20m upfront fee with an estimated $80m or more in backend bonuses tied to the film's box-office performance.

The upfront payment is said to be roughly double what Holland received for the 2021 film No Way Home. His pay for the role has climbed steadily since he first appeared as Spider-Man in a supporting part in Captain America: Civil War in 2016, when he was reportedly paid $250,000. He is said to have earned $500,000 for Homecoming in 2017, $4m for Far from Home in 2019, and $10m for No Way Home. His original contract is understood to have lapsed after that film, with the new, far larger deal negotiated separately.

Brand New Day has become the eighth highest-grossing film of all time, unadjusted for inflation, after passing $2bn in global ticket sales in only its third week of release. Among the eight films to reach that threshold, only Avengers: Endgame, released in 2019, got there faster.

How much has the film actually made, and how fast?

According to Variety, the film had reached a worldwide total of about $2.023bn by 16 August 2026, split roughly between $785m in North America and $1.23bn from overseas markets, making it the highest-grossing release of 2026 to date. A separate tally from Box Office Watch put the domestic figure at $794.1m after three weekends, built on successive weekend grosses of $360.09m, $144.25m and $70.71m. had earlier reported that the film's opening weekend in the US and Canada reached $360m, a figure that surpassed the previous domestic-debut record set by Avengers: Endgame.

The scale of that opening was already apparent in early coverage: CNN reported a $927m worldwide opening weekend, while CNBC noted that $121m of that total came from China, helping drive what was described as a record-breaking global start. CNBC also reported that the film's domestic opening initially came in just short of Endgame's record before revised estimates pushed it above that benchmark.

Our own earlier reporting tracked this trajectory as it unfolded: coverage of the film's opening weekend noted that its $927m global haul was the second-biggest launch ever recorded and gave Disney momentum ahead of Avengers: Doomsday. A review published shortly before release found that Zendaya was the film's strongest presence in a reset sequel built around Holland's return as Spider-Man and the reappearance of MJ.

How does this fit into Marvel's recent box-office record?

The success of Brand New Day arrives after a period of softening audience interest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and superhero films generally. In 2023, The Marvels grossed only $206m against a production budget of $270m. In 2024, Madame Web, a character with ties to Spider-Man, also underperformed. In 2025, Marvel released what was described as three consecutive commercial disappointments: Captain America: Brave New World took $415m, well below the $1.15bn earned by the previous Captain America film in 2016; Thunderbolts made $382m against a $180m production cost; and The Fantastic Four: First Steps took $521m against a $200m budget.

What else has made this a standout year for Holland?

Beyond Brand New Day, Holland appeared as Telemachus in Christopher Nolan's adaptation, the second most commercially successful film of 2026 with $1.3bn in ticket sales. He also confirmed his marriage to Zendaya, his co-star across both projects. Their on-screen and off-screen partnership stretches back a decade: an earlier feature on Zendaya and Holland's relationship traced how the pair met in 2016 and have since promoted three Spider-Man films together, with Holland confirming their marriage around the release of the fourth. The film's build-up also drew heavy fan speculation, with an earlier report examining rumours about characters and villains fuelled by cryptic marketing from Marvel.

What happens next?

No confirmed decision, hearing or scheduled event tied to Holland's contract or the film's box-office run has been identified beyond the figures already reported. Sony Pictures has been contacted for comment on the reported pay arrangement.

  • Holland is reportedly set to earn at least $100m for Brand New Day, including a $20m upfront fee.
  • The film has passed $2bn worldwide, becoming the eighth highest-grossing film ever and the second-fastest to hit that mark.
  • Domestic grosses stand at roughly $785m-$794m depending on the source, with overseas takings near $1.23bn.
  • The film's $360m opening weekend in the US and Canada beat the previous record held by Avengers: Endgame.
  • Its success contrasts with underperforming Marvel releases in 2023-2025, including The Marvels, Madame Web, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
