Strike Concludes Following Pay Increase

Approximately 40 union members ended a five-week strike at Haldane Fisher's Carnbane site in Newry, one of Northern Ireland's prominent building supplies companies. The union attributed the resolution to an "inflation beating pay increase."

Earlier in the week, striking employees informed NI that they had previously rejected a pay offer of up to 2.8%, stating it was "still nowhere near inflation."

NI has reached out to Haldane Fisher for a comment regarding the union's announcement.

Union Statements

In a statement released on Saturday, Unite general secretary Sharon Graham remarked:

This was a hard fought and well won victory by workers who were prepared to strike to secure a decent pay increase.

She further emphasized that joining a union remains the "best way for workers to protect against the rising cost of living."

Unite regional officer Sean Smyth added:

The workers struggle at Haldane Fisher has been inspiring.
This strike should never have been necessary but now the workers return with renewed confidence having won respect and an inflation-busting pay deal.
