Historic 215-year-old chapel offered at auction for just £1

A Grade II listed 19th-century chapel in Aberdare that once held 900 worshippers is being auctioned with a £1 guide price. The Ebenezer Chapel has been derelict since 2009, though previous plans for conversion to flats have lapsed. The auction begins on 8 October.

A 19th-century revivalist chapel in Wales is being offered at auction with a starting price of £1, despite its Grade II listed status and architectural significance.

The Ebenezer Chapel in Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf, once accommodated up to 900 worshippers within its distinctive interior, featuring long curved wooden pews and soaring arched windows. The building ceased active use in 2009 and has since fallen into disrepair, with vegetation overtaking the site and structural deterioration evident throughout.

According to Paul Fosh Auctions, the substantial detached structure comprises two storeys of accommodation and includes a single garage of domestic proportions. The property occupies approximately 0.23 acres in the Trecynon area of Aberdare, positioned within an established residential neighbourhood roughly half a mile from the town centre. The site benefits from potential vehicular access via both front and rear entrances.

Previous renovation plans

The chapel has undergone partial renovation work in the past, and planning permission was previously granted for its conversion into five residential flats. However, that planning consent has now expired, leaving the building's future use uncertain. The overgrown plot currently contains debris, building materials, and deteriorating fixtures scattered across the interior spaces.

Auctioneer Sean Roper described the location as sought-after, noting that the Grade II listed chapel represents a substantial property asset despite its current condition.

"This large former chapel which also has a domestic-sized single garage is in the sought-after location of Trecynon,"
he stated.
"The Grade II listed chapel has two storeys of accommodation and sits in a sizeable but now overgrown plot with potential access from the front and rear of the site."

When will the auction take place?

The property will go under the hammer on 8 October, when bidding will commence at the £1 guide price. The nominal starting figure suggests the auctioneers are seeking to attract potential buyers and investors interested in heritage property restoration projects, despite the significant work required to bring the chapel back into use.
