Tribute to Billy Steinberg, Influential Songwriter
Grammy-winning American songwriter Billy Steinberg, renowned for penning numerous chart-topping hits including Madonna's iconic "Like a Virgin," has passed away at the age of 75.
Steinberg's family paid tribute to him, describing him as a "visionary lyricist, devoted husband, loving father, and one of the most influential songwriters of his era."
His extensive catalog includes songs performed by prominent artists such as Whitney Houston, Roy Orbison, Celine Dion, Demi Lovato, and The Bangles.
Steinberg's lawyer confirmed to the BBC that he died in Los Angeles after battling cancer.
Personal Reflections and Legacy
Reflecting on Steinberg's creative process, his family noted that "his lyrics often began as deeply personal reflections, transformed into anthems in which millions found themselves."
"Billy Steinberg's life was a testament to the enduring power of a well-written song - and to the idea that honesty, when set to music, can outlive us all," the family's statement read.
Throughout his four-decade career, Steinberg earned multiple industry accolades, including a Grammy Award for his contributions to Celine Dion's 1996 album Falling Into You.
"Yet those closest to him knew that what mattered most was not recognition, but connection - the magic of hearing a crowd sing back something that once lived only in his notebook."
Career and Collaborations
Born William Steinberg in California, he began a significant songwriting partnership with vocalist and songwriter Tom Kelly in the early 1980s.
The duo not only co-wrote several chart-topping singles but also led a short-lived rock band named i-Ten.
Their breakthrough came with Madonna's "Like a Virgin" in 1984, which topped the US Billboard Hot 100 and became the title track of her second album.
Steinberg and Kelly also collaborated on other major hits such as Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" (1986), Whitney Houston's "So Emotional" (1987), and "I Touch Myself" by the Divinyls (1990).
In the early 2000s, Steinberg continued his songwriting success with tracks like JoJo's "Too Little Too Late" and Demi Lovato's "Give Your Heart a Break."
Recognition and Family
In 2011, Steinberg was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which recognizes him as one of the "most successful songwriters" whose work has become "enduring classics."
He is survived by his wife Trina, two sons, and two stepchildren.
