British number one Katie Boulter reacts during her win against Viktorija Golubic

Katie Boulter reached the last 16 of the Hong Kong Open after overcoming a controversial moment that rattled her composure during her match against Viktorija Golubic. According to BBC Sport, the British number one secured a 6-2 7-6 (7-2) victory in a match lasting one hour and 47 minutes, though she came close to losing after being broken while serving for the match.

Boulter, seeded eighth at the tournament, was leading 5-2 in the second set when an audible noise from outside the court distracted her during a point. She appealed to chair umpire S. Takahashi to have the point replayed, but the umpire declined, saying she had not seen either player stop during the rally. The disputed sound was described as resembling a Windows 10 error alert.

The incident unsettled Boulter, who lost her next service game and was forced into a tie-break. She recovered to win the second set decisively at 7-2 in the tie-break, but acknowledged the moment had affected her performance.

How did Boulter respond to the incident?

Boulter reflected on the disruption after the match, describing it as a learning experience.

"It was interesting. I was playing some really good tennis. I feel like I should have closed it out but a couple of things happened. There was a little bit of interesting judgement which got under my skin a little bit and, usually, I'm pretty good at batting it off but I was a little tired. It's end of season and it seemed to get to me but lesson learned, I managed to get over the line."
The British number one's comment highlighted how fatigue at the end of the season made her less resilient to the kind of frustration that would normally roll off her shoulders.

This victory marks a significant turnaround for Boulter, who had struggled in recent weeks. She was eliminated from the US Open in the second round on 2 September 2026, losing 6-1 6-0 to Karolina Muchova in just 58 minutes, and then suffered a first-round defeat to Diana Shnaider at the Wuhan Open. However, she bounced back with an impressive performance at the Japan Open last month, where she defeated Golubic in dominant fashion—6-2 6-1 in under an hour—to reach the semi-finals.

What is Boulter's path forward?

Boulter will face American Claire Liu in the second round as she continues her campaign at the 2026 Hong Kong Tennis Open, a WTA 250 event on outdoor hard courts at Victoria Park Tennis Stadium. The tournament's singles and doubles finals are scheduled for 8 November 2026, giving Boulter the opportunity to make a deep run and end her season on a positive note.

Venus Williams extends losing streak in Hong Kong

In contrasting news from the tournament, Venus Williams suffered her 17th consecutive singles defeat as she lost to fellow American Mary Stoiana in the first round. The 46-year-old, ranked 597th in the women's rankings, fell 6-2 6-3 to 23-year-old Stoiana, who is ranked 113th. Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, has not won a singles match since July 2025 and relies on wildcards to compete in WTA tournaments. The loss underscores the challenges facing the veteran player as she attempts to extend her career at an age when most professional tennis players have long retired.
