Fery Advances to Third Round at Wimbledon
Arthur Fery is only the fourth British wildcard to reach the men's singles third round at Wimbledon since 2000.
Fery sustained British hopes at Wimbledon by recovering from a set down to defeat Finland's Otto Virtanen and advance to the third round. Meanwhile, Katie Swan's return to SW19 ended as she was defeated by Madison Keys.
After the opening round, only four British players remained at the All England Club, with 15 Britons eliminated in the first round—the highest number since 1988.
Fery became the first British man to reach the second round when he came back from a set down to beat Bosnia's Damir Dzumhur on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old wildcard continued his winning streak in a similar fashion against Virtanen, rallying to secure a 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 6-3 victory on a packed Court 18.
However, Swan, making her first Wimbledon appearance in three years, was unable to join Fery in the third round, falling 6-1, 6-4 to American Madison Keys.
The 27-year-old Keys experienced a "full-circle moment" on her return, having previously defeated Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu to claim her first Grand Slam main-draw win since 2018.
It is the first time Fery, who was observed by the Princess of Wales during part of his match, has reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament.
Other British players, Jacob Fearnley and Jan Choinski, will aim to advance later on Thursday when they face Jaume Munar and Frances Tiafoe, respectively.
Ranked 114th in the world, Fery will next compete against another unseeded player, either Belgium's Zizou Bergs or Portugal's Jaime Faria.
