Welsh Rugby Union Eyes Entry into Premiership Women's Rugby
The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) is preparing to take initial steps toward entering a team in England's premier women's club competition, Premiership Women's Rugby (PWR).
PWR has initiated an 'expressions of interest' process as it considers expanding its current nine-team league. Welsh regional teams Brython Thunder and Gwalia Lightning currently participate in the Celtic Challenge, a competition involving clubs from Ireland and Scotland. However, the WRU aspires to join the most competitive and financially rewarding domestic women's rugby league in Europe.
Notably, 28 of the 38 players in Sean Lynn's Six Nations squad compete in the PWR.
"As soon as I saw it come out, it's very exciting," said Lynn, who secured three league titles with Gloucester-Hartpury before assuming the Wales head coach role last year. "We'll definitely put our expression of interest into it and see where we go from there."
Clubs across the UK and Ireland have until 30 April to submit their expressions of interest.
Welsh Women's Rugby Development and Player Retention
The WRU has committed to a comprehensive overhaul of women's rugby in Wales, focusing on stemming the migration of playing talent to England. Initiatives include establishing a national academy, player development centres, and increased funding for Thunder and Lightning, who have benefited from some Wales internationals based in England.
However, the prevalence of Welsh players based outside Wales has posed challenges for national coaches, with many players lacking consistent game time.
"Many of our best players head east to England," stated Amanda Bennett, chair of the WRU women's committee. "There's an argument that it is a benefit for them to be training next to world champions but that creates issues over access for the Wales national coaches while too many of those players are not playing.
"We have seen in WXV tournaments and the last World Cup that many of our players were not physically or psychology prepared."
Welsh Players in PWR and Domestic Competition
Wales currently has 11 players at reigning PWR champions Gloucester-Hartpury, including national captain Kate Williams, who described the prospect of a Welsh team joining the PWR as "exciting."
"It hasn't seemed like it's been an option before but it could be an option in the future," Williams said.
Historically, Wales has lacked a high-standard domestic women's rugby competition. The Celtic Challenge aims to fill this gap, with Thunder and Lightning both reaching the semi-finals in the current season. While still developing, Lynn believes the competition serves a valuable role.
"I do still strongly believe the Celtic Challenge will get there with the investment from Ireland and Scotland, but if we've got an opportunity to put a side in the PWR, we'll be looking to show our interest," Lynn added.
Leicester and Trailfinders were the most recent clubs to join the PWR in 2023.
