Stormers Edge Past Dragons in Competitive URC Clash
The Stormers have reclaimed second place in the United Rugby Championship (URC) following a hard-fought victory against the Dragons in Cape Town. Despite not performing at their peak, the South African team managed to score four tries, closing the gap to four points behind league leaders Glasgow.
The Stormers held a 14-7 lead at halftime, courtesy of two tries from South African fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who has a background at Llandovery College. Dragons lock Seb Davies responded with a try for the visitors.
In the second half, the Stormers increased their dominance, particularly through a powerful scrum, which facilitated tries from number eight Evan Roos and wing Wandisile Simelane, securing the maximum points available.
The Dragons, featuring Wales hooker Elliot Dee making his first appearance since a shoulder injury sustained in the opening weekend, challenged the Stormers throughout the match. They sought to claim two bonus points late in the game with tries from flanker Thomas Young and wing Rio Dyer but ultimately fell short.
Match Details and Player Contributions
Tries for the Stormers were scored by Feinberg-Mngomezulu (2), Roos, and Simelane. Feinberg-Mngomezulu also contributed three conversions and a penalty. For the Dragons, tries came from Seb Davies, Thomas Young, and Rio Dyer, with O'Brien successfully converting three times.
Stormers coach John Dobson emphasized the importance of securing a top-four finish in the URC and highlighted home advantage as a critical factor in the playoffs. He also acknowledged the resilience of the Dragons, who did not concede easily.
"We are focused on the race to the top four rather than eight, with home advantage key in the play-offs," Dobson said before the game. "Our guests would not roll over, and so it proved."
The first half was marked by a mixture of Stormers' errors and Dragons' determination, resulting in a narrow 14-7 lead for the home side. Feinberg-Mngomezulu scored twice in the opening quarter from passes by Imad Khan, while Dragons’ lock Seb Davies scored his first try since joining from Cardiff last summer. The Dragons lost open-side Harry Beddall to a head injury during the match.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu also made a crucial try-saving tackle on scrum-half Rhodri Williams to prevent the Dragons from leveling the score.
Early in the second half, the Stormers opted for a penalty kick, extending their lead to 17-7. Despite missing several opportunities, they secured their third try through Roos in the 50th minute following a scrum five metres from the Dragons' try line.
The Dragons responded with a try from flanker Thomas Young, his first for the club, maintaining pressure on the Stormers. The visitors continued to challenge until a fortunate bounce allowed Simelane to capitalize on his own grubber kick around the hour mark.
Rio Dyer was initially denied a try due to Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s timely grounding of the ball during a simultaneous effort, but Dyer later scored from an inside pass, narrowing the deficit to eight points with seven minutes remaining.
Despite their efforts, the Dragons were unable to score again and remain below the Scarlets in the URC standings.
