England Overhaul Backline with 12 Changes Ahead of Italy Match
Cadan Murley, Fin Smith, and Seb Atkinson have been selected to start for England against Italy following two defeats in three games at the beginning of their Six Nations campaign.
England have dramatically reshaped their backline, making a total of 12 changes—nine personnel swaps and three positional adjustments—to their starting lineup in an effort to reinvigorate their stalled Six Nations run.
Fin Smith will start at fly-half, Gloucester centre Seb Atkinson is named at inside centre (12) for his third cap, while George Ford and Fraser Dingwall, key contributors during England's dominant autumn campaign, have been omitted from the matchday squad entirely.
Henry Arundell also loses his place, with Harlequins' Cadan Murley and Sale's Tom Roebuck preferred on the wings. Elliot Daly replaces full-back Freddie Steward, who was substituted before halftime in the 42-21 defeat to Ireland in the previous match.
With Ollie Lawrence sidelined due to injury, Tommy Freeman moves from wing to outside centre, and Ben Spencer is selected at scrum-half over Jack van Poortvliet, as first-choice Alex Mitchell is ruled out for the remainder of the tournament with a hamstring injury.
This extensive series of changes—the most England have made to their lineup between Six Nations matches since the tournament expanded in 2000—means that none of the backline positions are occupied by the same players who started against Ireland ten days ago.
England Team to Face Italy
England: Daly; Roebuck, Freeman, Atkinson, Murley; F Smith, Spencer; Genge, George, Heyes, Itoje (capt), Coles, Pepper, T Curry, Earl.
Replacements: Cowan-Dickie, Rodd, Davison, Chessum, Underhill, Pollock, Van Poortvliet, M Smith
Coaching Decisions and Forward Pack Adjustments
Head coach Steve Borthwick has been more conservative with changes among the forwards.
England's line-out struggled significantly against Ireland, and hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie, who was also withdrawn before halftime, is replaced by Jamie George in the starting lineup.
Alex Coles partners Maro Itoje in the second row, while Henry Pollock returns to the bench and Guy Pepper partners Tom Curry and Ben Earl in the back row. Lock Ollie Chessum moves to the bench.
England have sacrificed many of the players and combinations that contributed to a 12-match winning streak over the past year, but Borthwick hopes the energy, form, and enthusiasm of the new selections will offset the loss of continuity.
Atkinson and Murley were among several players who returned to their clubs last weekend to demonstrate their fitness and form.
Recent Performance and Opponent Analysis
After a comfortable victory over Wales in the opening round, England's performances have declined sharply, suffering losses to Scotland and Ireland by 11 and 21 points respectively.
England have never lost to Italy in 32 previous meetings, but Italy's recent performances contrast with their opponents'.
Italy defeated Scotland in their opener and challenged Ireland and France closely in their defeats. Although they have lost their dynamic full-back Ange Capuozzo to injury, centre Ignacio Brex has returned to the squad after missing the past two games due to personal reasons.
