Northampton Pass Tough Castres Test to Reach Quarter-Finals

Northampton Saints faced a rigorous challenge from an impressive Castres side in the Champions Cup, ultimately prevailing in a compelling match to advance to the quarter-finals.

Castres took an early 12-0 lead within 11 minutes through tries from Christian Ambadiang and Theo Chabouni, putting the home team under pressure. However, a penalty try awarded to Northampton, coupled with Ambadiang’s yellow card, provided the hosts with an opportunity to regain momentum.

Northampton prop Danilo Fischetti powered over for a try, but the Saints trailed 15-14 at halftime. Early in the second half, Josh Kemeny scored following impressive footwork from captain George Furbank, giving Saints their first lead of the match.

From that point, tries came from both sides: Tommy Freeman and Furbank scored for Northampton, while Tyler Ardron and Vuate Karawalevu responded for Castres.

Fraser Dingwall’s try extended Northampton’s lead, but Castres remained competitive, with Ambadiang securing his second try late in the match. The French Top 14 side pushed the Premiership leaders to the final whistle.

Phil Dowson’s Saints will now face the winner of the upcoming all-English quarter-final between Bath and Saracens.

Castres’ Early Pressure and Line Speed Challenge Saints

Castres’ aggressive line speed and pressure on Northampton’s passes caused early handling errors, leading to their opening tries.

Scrum-half Jeremy Fernandez broke from a scrum and delivered a precise kick behind the Saints’ defense, allowing winger Ambadiang to score after eight minutes.

Shortly after, Ambadiang intercepted a loose pass, and the ball was quickly moved wide for Chabouni to score, extending Castres’ lead to 12-0.

Northampton responded with a penalty try awarded after Ambadiang’s high tackle on Archie McParland, which also resulted in Ambadiang’s yellow card.

Castres were reduced to 13 men after Guillaume Ducat received a yellow card for a reckless clearance on Henry Pollock at a ruck. Despite this, they extended their lead with a Fernandez penalty before Northampton’s Fischetti scored a try.

Castres held a narrow one-point lead at halftime, but Northampton took the lead early in the second half when Furbank created space for Kemeny to score.

Back-and-Forth Second Half with Multiple Tries

Saints appeared to gain control when Furbank assisted Freeman’s try, making the score 26-15. However, Ardron immediately responded for Castres by intercepting a pass and scoring.

Karawalevu powered over from first-phase ball to bring Castres within one point at 28-27 in the 56th minute. He nearly scored again soon after, but the try was disallowed for a knock-on from the restart.

This proved pivotal as Furbank then broke through the Castres defense to score a crucial fifth try for Northampton, followed shortly by McParland’s sixth try.

Castres received a third yellow card when Veresa Ramototabua was sent off in the 69th minute. Dingwall capitalized on the extra space to score, giving Saints the breathing room needed to secure victory.

Saints Survive a Tough Challenge from Castres

Northampton Saints faced a significant challenge from Castres, a team not widely expected to threaten the Premiership leaders on their home ground.

Castres disrupted Northampton’s attacks from the outset and demonstrated their threat with possession, racing to a 12-0 lead early in the match.

The Saints crowd was subdued by Castres’ early dominance, but disciplinary issues for the visitors allowed Northampton to regain footing. Two yellow cards in quick succession appeared to galvanize the home side.

Castres remained resilient throughout, refusing to relinquish their challenge. Ultimately, Northampton emerged victorious in a chaotic, high-quality contest that marked a strong start to the last-16 weekend.

While Saints passed this test of character, they face further challenges ahead, including a quarter-final against Bath or Saracens and a potential semi-final against Bordeaux, who defeated them in last year’s final and this year’s pool stage.
