Oscar Jegou Suspended for Eye Gouging Incident
France flanker Oscar Jegou, who has started all of France's Six Nations matches this year, will be absent from the upcoming Six Nations clash against England on Saturday due to a four-week suspension. The disciplinary action follows an incident in which Jegou was found guilty of gouging an opponent's eye.
An independent disciplinary committee reviewed the incident involving Jegou, 22, and determined that he made "reckless contact with the eye(s)" of Scotland hooker Ewan Ashman during France's 50-40 defeat at Murrayfield on the previous Saturday.
Although Jegou was not penalized during the match, the committee concluded that the nature of the offense warranted a red card. Initially, the suspension was set at six weeks but was reduced to four weeks considering Jegou's prior good conduct and disciplinary record.
Impact on France's Six Nations Campaign
The defeat to Scotland ended France's hopes of securing a Grand Slam this year. Both France and Scotland now enter the final round tied on 16 points in the Six Nations table, competing for the championship alongside third-placed Ireland.
Jegou's suspension means he will miss the crucial match against England in Paris scheduled for 20:10 GMT. Additionally, he will be unavailable for his club, La Rochelle, in their upcoming fixtures against Pau, Bayonne, and Newcastle Falcons.
Scotland, whose points difference is inferior to France's, will face Ireland in Dublin on Saturday at 14:10 GMT.
