Dragons captain Angus O'Brien missed a last-minute conversion as his team and Benetton concluded a dramatic United Rugby Championship (URC) match in a draw at Rodney Parade.

Dragons centre Fine Inisi scored a try in the 80th minute to level the scores, but O'Brien's touchline conversion attempt went wide.

Earlier in the match, Dragons lock Levi Douglas scored an early try but was shown a 20-minute red card for a dangerous ruck clearout in the 32nd minute.

The hosts also spent 10 minutes playing with 13 men after Inisi received a first-half yellow card.

Benetton's Fiji wing Onisi Ratave starred with two tries, while Italy full-back Matt Gallagher also scored. However, fly-half Jacob Umaga missed three conversions.

This match marked the Dragons' third league draw this season in 12 games and the second time Benetton have finished level with opponents.

Filo Tiatia's side was aiming for a fifth consecutive victory at Rodney Parade, a feat they had not achieved since December 2019 to February 2020.

The Dragons also sought redemption after suffering a heavy 74-21 defeat to Benetton in the Challenge Cup at Stadio Monigo in January.

Dragons were without Wales internationals Aaron Wainwright and Ben Carter, while Benetton faced challenges due to the Six Nations, with 14 players in Italy's squad for their defeat by France in Lille. Nonetheless, Benetton could call upon players from other nations.

It was the Dragons' first home league game in nearly two months, and they were caught off guard when Ratave scored after just one minute.

Early disruptions forced the Dragons into two substitutions: Wales Under-20s number eight Evan Minto replaced the injured Shane Lewis-Hughes, and Rhodri Williams came on for the in-form Che Hope.

The Dragons recovered from these setbacks as Douglas powered over for a try, aided by returning Wales prop Chris Coleman, with O'Brien converting.

Tonga centre Malakai Fekitoa received a yellow card for a high dangerous tackle on Dragons wing David Richards.

Benetton dominated the scrum before Ratave produced an impressive individual 70-metre try, capitalizing on a lapse in the Dragons' defence.

Douglas was initially shown a yellow card for an illegal ruck clearout, known as a croc roll, on Benetton prop Thomas Gallo.

The Dragons' handling errors repeatedly hindered their attacking efforts, and their indiscipline was further exposed when Inisi was sent to the sin-bin for a deliberate knock-on.

Douglas' yellow card was upgraded to a 20-minute red card at the start of the second half, leaving the Dragons with 13 players as the half commenced.

Benetton appeared to take control after some fine handling and opportunism allowed Gallagher to react quickly and score.

The Dragons returned to full strength with the introduction of Wales wing Rio Dyer and replacement centre Fetuli Paea, who added attacking impetus.

The hosts seemed to reduce the deficit when referee Eoghan Cross awarded a penalty try and showed a yellow card to Benetton replacement lock Scott Scrafton.

However, the television match official (TMO) intervened, penalizing Dragons flanker Harry Beddall for obstruction and allowing Scrafton to remain on the field.

The Dragons' line-out began to falter in the second half, with replacement hooker Ollie Burrows struggling to find his jumpers.

Defensively, replacement prop Owain James made an excellent covering tackle, and centre Aneurin Owen secured two turnovers to repel Benetton's attacks.

Owen's second turnover enabled O'Brien to narrow the gap to five points with a successful penalty.

O'Brien missed a penalty kick to touch, with the ball going dead, but the Dragons persisted.

In the final minute, Inisi crossed for a try, securing a draw despite O'Brien's conversion attempt sailing wide.
