Cardiff End Leinster's Winning Streak in Rain-Soaked Arms Park
Cardiff made significant progress towards securing a place in the United Rugby Championship (URC) play-offs by halting Leinster's winning run at a rain-drenched Arms Park. The Blue and Blacks climbed to third in the standings with their first victory over the Irish province since January 2022.
The hosts led 3-0 at halftime under challenging weather conditions and extended their advantage to 8-0 entering the final quarter, courtesy of a counter-attack try by scrum-half Aled Davies, who joined Cardiff from Saracens in 2024.
Leinster responded in the 68th minute with a converted try from their scrum-half Luke McGrath, putting pressure on Cardiff, who were reduced to 14 men after Jacob Beetham received a yellow card. Despite this, Cardiff managed to maintain their lead and expertly ran down the clock, ending the champions' winning streak across all competitions at 11 games.
Match Impact and Standings
Cardiff are now level on points with second-placed Leinster and hold a crucial 15-point cushion over teams vying to enter the top eight. The match featured difficult playing conditions, with the only first-half score coming from Cardiff fly-half Callum Sheedy, who successfully kicked a 19th-minute penalty.
The Blue and Blacks struggled to capitalize in the opposition 22, even as Leinster played with 14 men for a period following a yellow card to Charlie Tector for a high and late hit on Ben Thomas. Tector had been introduced early in the game after Leinster lost fly-half Harry Byrne, their sole player released from Six Nations duty, to a head injury.
Leinster coach Leo Cullen made several tactical substitutions late in the first half, bringing on former France tight-head prop Rabah Slimani and South African lock RG Snyman among others.
Second Half Highlights and Key Moments
Despite playing into the wind, Cardiff maintained territorial dominance early in the second half. In the 54th minute, Davies scored a pivotal try after a counter-attack initiated by Cam Winnett and Mason Grady, following a clearance error by Jimmy O'Brien. The move was finished off with a pass from flanker Dan Thomas.
Leinster, trailing 8-0, sought to respond and gained momentum when Cardiff wing Beetham was shown a yellow card in the 65th minute for a deliberate knock-on. Two minutes later, Leinster scored through McGrath, who capitalized on a line break and offload by replacement full-back Andrew Osborne. Tector converted the try, narrowing the score to one point.
Despite the pressure, Cardiff held firm to secure a vital victory.
