Cardiff Targets URC Play-Off Boost Against Leinster

Cardiff intends to create 'chaos' with their ball-handling skills to enhance their United Rugby Championship (URC) play-off prospects in their upcoming match against Leinster on Friday.

The Blue and Blacks will be strengthened by the inclusion of Wales centre Ben Thomas, wing Mason Grady, and hooker Liam Belcher as they host the Irish province at the Arms Park on Friday at 19:00 GMT.

These players have been released from Six Nations duty to gain game time ahead of the final two rounds. Additionally, Wales Under-20s wing Tom Bowen is named as a replacement for fifth-placed Cardiff.

Leinster, positioned second in the table, will field a strong lineup featuring All Blacks centre Rieko Ioane alongside Ireland and British and Irish Lions international Robbie Henshaw in midfield.

Team Insights and Recent Form

Cardiff coach Corniel van Zyl has engaged in discussions with Benetton, while Wales hopeful Costelow remains in contention, though Plumtree is out of the Six Nations. The Wales U20s captain has been noted for his leadership qualities.

Despite the champions losing three of their first four games this season, they arrive in Cardiff on an 11-game winning streak across all competitions since their October loss at Munster.

"They are a team that are very good in defence and can get on top of you," said centre Harri Millard.
"We are looking to use our skill to beat that line speed and get our wingers on the ball to cause chaos. To do that we need quick ball in midfield from the forwards and hopefully that unlocks the edges for our backs."

Cardiff currently hold 36 points from 11 games and have secured match points in every URC fixture in the 2025-26 season.

They maintain an 11-point advantage over ninth-placed Ospreys and are well positioned to improve on last season’s performance, where they narrowly missed the top eight by one point.

In the four URC campaigns to date, the final play-off spot has been secured with 48 points twice and 50 points twice.

"You can go on the average of previous seasons about what is needed but every year is different and there are still quite a few games left," said coach Corniel van Zyl.
"Teams can beat each other and we are just looking to put our plan on the pitch and go for it from game to game."

Match Details and Line-Ups

The match is scheduled for Friday, 27 February at 19:00 GMT.

Full-back Jacob Beetham is selected on the wing, with Alun Lawrence continuing at blind-side flanker and Taine Basham chosen at number eight.

Tight-head prop Kieron Assiratti returns from a calf injury that previously forced him to withdraw from the Six Nations squad and is included among the replacements.

He is joined on the bench by academy back-row forward Evan Rees, who is poised to make his senior debut.

Cardiff will be without wing Josh Adams and flankers Alex Mann and James Botham, who are expected to play for Wales against Ireland next weekend, as well as tight-head prop Sam Wainwright, who serves as backup for Tomas Francis and Archie Griffin.

The Irish squad that defeated England at Twickenham included 14 Leinster players, with Harry Byrne released to participate at the Arms Park.
