Zhao's Early Lead Diminishes as Murphy Takes Control
Reigning world champion Zhao Xintong surrendered a 3-0 lead as Shaun Murphy mounted a comeback to lead 5-3 in the opening session of their World Championship quarter-final.
Zhao, 29, who has openly discussed the pressure of defending his title and overcoming the 'Crucible curse' that has affected first-time winners at the renowned Sheffield venue, started the match with impressive form.
A break of 122 indicated Zhao was continuing the momentum from his previous round victory over Ding Junhui. After securing the second frame and compiling a half-century in the third, Zhao had established a strong early advantage.
However, Murphy, the 2005 champion, responded with a 69 break and then won the next four frames consecutively to shift the momentum in his favor.
The English player captured the fifth and sixth frames on the black ball, capitalizing on errors from Zhao, and maintained control in the seventh frame.
In the eighth frame, Zhao missed the pink ball in a tense situation, which allowed Murphy to extend his lead to two frames heading into the second session scheduled for Tuesday evening at 19:00 BST.
Hawkins and Allen Contest a Tight Match
Elsewhere in the venue, Barry Hawkins and Northern Ireland's Mark Allen shared the first six frames in a high-quality encounter.
Hawkins, who had already recorded a century break and three additional half-centuries, then compiled breaks of 75 and 63 to take a 5-3 lead.
The match between Hawkins and Allen is also set to resume at 19:00 BST on Tuesday.
