Sports Alpha Capital (SAC) has completed its acquisition of Northampton Town, with the takeover approved by the Independent Football Regulator (IFR) and English Football League (EFL) earlier this month. The consortium, which counts former AC Milan, Chelsea and Brazil international Alexandre Pato among its investors, will take a 70% shareholding in Northampton Town Ventures Limited (NTVL), the entity that controls the majority stake in the League Two club.
The transaction resolves the club's financial position entirely, leaving Northampton debt-free following a pre-tax loss of just under £3 million announced in April 2026. Existing shareholders David Bower, Nigel Le Quesne and Kelvin Thomas will collectively maintain a 30% stake and remain as directors, though Thomas is stepping down from his position as chairman after leading the club through more than a decade of stewardship.
Thomas, who orchestrated the Cobblers' rescue from a winding-up petition in 2015, described his tenure as
an enormous privilege. SAC's Joao Xavier and Tim Chamberlain will assume the roles of co-chairmen, while Pato will take a seat on the board as a director. Chief executive James Whiting and supporters' representative Tom Cliffe will continue in their board positions, while Jim Rosenthal and Mike Wailing will transition to associate director roles.
Who are the new owners?
Sports Alpha Capital's investment consortium includes Gemcorp Capital, a London-based independent investment management firm, alongside Pato's involvement. The 37-year-old, who retired from professional football last year, brings significant sporting pedigree to the ownership structure. His most celebrated achievements came during a five-and-a-half-year tenure at AC Milan, where he netted 63 goals across 150 appearances and claimed a Serie A title in the 2010-11 season. He also represented Chelsea and earned international recognition with Brazil.
Pato and his fellow investors attended Northampton's 1-0 victory over Newport County on 5 September, observing the club's performance firsthand ahead of the takeover's completion.

What are the new owners' plans?
In a joint statement, Xavier and Chamberlain expressed their vision for the club's future. They stated they were
extremely proud to become custodians of a club with such a rich history, passionate supporter base and important place within its community. The co-chairmen emphasised that
ambition must go hand in hand with sustainability and an understanding of what the club means to the people of Northampton and Northamptonshire.
The new ownership has committed to maintaining Northampton's role as a source of community pride, pledging to work alongside the Community Trust, supporters, staff, partners and local stakeholders. Xavier and Chamberlain indicated they intend to spend considerable time in Northampton, engaging with supporters and collaborating to unlock the club's potential both competitively and commercially.
This is the beginning of a long-term commitment from Sports Alpha Capital to Northampton Town Football Club, and we are incredibly excited about the journey ahead, they added, though they deferred detailed announcements about their strategic vision to a later date.
What is the club's recent history?
Northampton endured relegation to the fourth tier last season, finishing bottom of the League One table. The club subsequently appointed Chris Hogg as manager in May and undertook significant squad reconstruction during the summer transfer window, bringing in 13 new players. Among the arrivals was striker Matty Warhurst, recruited from Manchester City's academy system.
The takeover represents a fresh chapter for a club that has experienced considerable turbulence. Thomas's stewardship, which began with the 2015 rescue operation, has now passed to new hands as the organisation seeks to rebuild under fresh ownership and management.
What is Sports Alpha Capital's track record?
The consortium had previously engaged in discussions regarding a takeover of Colchester United earlier this year but withdrew from the proposed deal following initial talks. The decision to pursue Northampton instead suggests the ownership group identified stronger strategic alignment with the Cobblers' circumstances and community positioning.
What happens next?
Northampton will continue their League Two campaign under the new ownership structure. The club's fixture schedule includes a match against Oldham Athletic scheduled for 3 October, though that fixture is currently listed as postponed pending confirmation of rearrangement details.
