Matty Jones on the touchline for Wales' thrashing by Austria

Matty Jones has departed his position as Wales Under-21s head coach following a disappointing European Championship qualification campaign. According to BBC Sport, Jones, who held the role since September 2022 and was contracted until 2028, oversaw a fourth-place finish in the Uefa Under-21 Championship qualification group.

The Welsh side's campaign fell short of expectations, winning only two of their eight group-stage matches. They endured heavy defeats to Belgium, Austria and Belarus, and were beaten twice by Denmark during the qualification process. In a statement shared on social media, Jones expressed the emotional toll of the departure:

My greatest honour to have done this role, my biggest heartbreak to lose it.

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) acknowledged Jones's tenure in an official statement, saying:

The FAW would like to put on record its gratitude to Matty Jones for his commitment to the Cymru National Teams and wish him the very best for the future.

Jones's Playing Career and First Campaign

Jones, who was born in Llanelli, earned 13 caps for Wales as a player before injuries forced him to retire at the age of 23. During his initial campaign as under-21s manager, he came close to guiding Wales to the European Under-21 Championship finals. The team narrowly missed out on the play-offs due to their head-to-head record against Czech Republic, a setback compounded by an administrative error that left Wales without several key players for crucial matches.

Player Development Under Jones

Despite the qualification disappointment, Jones's tenure produced tangible benefits for Welsh football development. During his time in charge, he oversaw the progression of several players into the senior international setup, including Joel Colwill, Cian Ashford, Dylan Lawlor, Cameron Congrave and Lewis Koumas, who all graduated to full international appearances for Wales.
