Rabbi Matondo has joined Hibernian on a contract running until the end of the season, with the option to extend for a further year. The 26-year-old Wales international and former Rangers winger becomes the first signing for new manager Marink Reedijk, who took charge last month following David Gray's departure.
Matondo arrived at Easter Road after a trial period that impressed the club's coaching staff. According to reports from the club's observer, he scored twice and provided two assists across two bounce games during his evaluation, demonstrating his attacking threat in wide areas.
The winger's recent career has seen him move between several clubs. He departed Norway's Brann in August 2025 following a five-month stint, ending a near four-year period at Rangers during which he made 70 appearances. His time at Ibrox included a loan spell at Hannover, and he has previously played for Schalke, Stoke City and Cercle Brugge.
Matondo made his final Rangers appearance in January 2025. During his time in Glasgow, approximately two-thirds of his 70 appearances came in the Scottish Premiership, with seven of his eight goals scored in the top flight—including one against Hibernian.
Before joining Hibernian, Matondo had also trained with Sheffield United during the summer and played in three pre-season matches, though manager Chris Wilder indicated the club had decided against pursuing a permanent deal.
At international level, Matondo has earned 15 caps for Wales. His most recent appearance came in 2025, and that same year he scored his only international goal to date in a 3-1 victory over Kazakhstan.
Why Hibernian targeted Matondo
Hibernian's pursuit of the winger reflected their desire to add more attacking width to their squad. Under former head coach David Gray, the club had largely favoured a wing-back system, and new manager Reedijk appears keen to develop more traditional wide-play options.
Reedijk outlined his assessment of the player following Hibernian's training camp in La Manga during the international break.
He made an immediate impression during our time in La Manga and has shown a great attitude, strong application and a real willingness to learn and adapt. Rabbi gives us pace, directness and a real threat in wide areas, while also bringing a positive personality into the dressing room. He has settled in quickly and we are looking forward to working with him and seeing the impact he can make.
What happens next
Hibernian are scheduled to visit Dundee United on 10 October 2026, with kick-off at 15:00, where Matondo may feature in the squad as the club continues its campaign.
