Leicester City Lose Appeal Against Points Deduction
Leicester City currently sit 22nd in the Championship, one point from safety with five matches remaining in the season.
The club has lost its appeal against a six-point deduction imposed for breaching English Football League (EFL) financial regulations.
The penalty was handed down in February by an independent commission, initially dropping Leicester from 17th to 20th place. Since then, the Foxes have slipped further into the Championship relegation zone and are now a point adrift of safety with five games left to play.
Leicester were originally charged by the Premier League in May 2025 for violating profit and sustainability rules (PSR) during the 2023-24 season, when the club was competing in the Championship.
"With the matter now at an end and five games of the season remaining, everyone at the club is fully focused on the matches in front of us and on shaping the outcome of our season through our results on the pitch," a Leicester statement said.
"We know this has been a challenging period, and we thank our supporters for the backing they continue to give the team.
"The responsibility now is to ensure these remaining games are approached with the focus and intent our current situation demands."
Background on the Financial Breach and Sanction
Leicester were charged with breaching the Premier League's financial rules and were docked six points on 5 February, a decision the club described as "disproportionate" and expressed disappointment over.
Under the PSR, Premier League clubs are restricted from losing more than £105 million over a three-year period. This limit is reduced by £22 million for each season a club spends outside the top flight.
Although the Premier League initially charged Leicester, the EFL took over the case following the club's relegation last year. The EFL found Leicester guilty of breaching PSR rules applicable within the English Football League.
Leicester contended that their case should have been evaluated over a 36-month period rather than 37 months, the latter caused by a delay in submitting their 2023-24 accounts.
The independent commission ruled that the assessment period should be 36 months, concluding that Leicester's overspend exceeded the EFL's £83 million limit by £20.8 million during that timeframe.
The club lodged an appeal against the decision two weeks later, less than 24 hours after appointing Gary Rowett as interim head coach until the end of the season.
Impact on Team Performance
Since the deduction of six points, Leicester's form has deteriorated further, making their fight to avoid a second consecutive relegation increasingly difficult. The team has recorded just one win in 12 matches across all competitions.
