Clifford Leads Kerry to Convincing Win Over Armagh

Holders Kerry delivered a commanding performance to defeat Armagh 4-18 to 0-17 in round three of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship at Fitzgerald Stadium.

Kerry held a 2-8 to 0-8 lead at halftime in Killarney, with goals from David Clifford and Paul Geaney, the latter scored just before the break and proved pivotal in shifting the momentum of the match.

Early in the second half, Joe O'Connor added a third goal for Jack O'Connor's team, and Keith Evans secured a late fourth goal, culminating in a comprehensive victory.

David Clifford was the standout player, contributing 1-10 as Kerry secured their quarter-final spot and demonstrated their strong championship intentions.

For Armagh, their pursuit of the Sam Maguire Cup ends after consecutive defeats, including a narrow loss to Louth the previous week and a heavy defeat by Kerry on Saturday.

Pulsating First Half in Killarney

Paul Geaney's goal just before half-time stretched Kerry's lead out to six points

Armagh started strongly in Killarney, with Joe McElroy narrowly missing an early goal attempt as his shot went just wide.

Paul Geaney opened the scoring for Kerry, but Armagh responded with four consecutive points to take the lead.

However, Armagh's momentum faltered due to inefficiency and some excellent play from David Clifford.

The Orchard County side missed four wides in succession before Clifford, quiet until the 12th minute, ignited the game by scoring his 26th championship goal on his 50th appearance, finishing low into the far corner after a precise pass from Dylan Geaney.

Clifford added another point, but Armagh fought back with scores from Ross McQuillan and Jason Duffy.

The match remained end-to-end as Clifford scored again and Dylan Geaney contributed three points, including a two-pointer, to put Kerry ahead.

Armagh closed the gap with a close-range free from Conor Turbitt and a point from Oisin Conaty, but Clifford’s two-pointer restored Kerry's three-point lead.

On the cusp of halftime, Armagh suffered a significant setback due to poor game management. As they pressed for a late point, Jarly Og Burns lost possession cheaply. With goalkeeper Ethan Rafferty out of position, Paul Geaney collected a long pass and calmly scored into an empty net, extending Kerry’s lead to six points at the break.

Kerry maintained their dominance after the interval, with points from Dylan Geaney and David Clifford increasing their advantage before Turbitt scored for Armagh.

Despite this, Clifford elevated his performance, adding another point before Joe O'Connor scored a third goal on the 37th minute following a well-executed team move, effectively sealing the outcome.

Kerry continued to extend their lead, moving 13 points clear with three successive points, including a two-pointer from Clifford. Similar to last year's All-Ireland quarter-final, Kerry appeared too strong for Armagh.

Jason Foley contributed a rare point, and Ethan Rafferty kicked a two-pointer for Armagh, who appeared overwhelmed.

Shane Murphy made two crucial saves to deny goals from Conaty and Callum O'Neill, before substitute Keith Evans scored his first championship goal by lifting the ball over Rafferty, further increasing Kerry’s winning margin.

Historically, the winner of Kerry versus Armagh championship matches has often gone on to claim the Sam Maguire Cup. With Kerry in this form, they are strong contenders to win the championship again this year.
