Newport County forward Shaquille Gwengwe has been suspended for three matches following his admission to a violent conduct charge, according to BBC Sport. The 25-year-old's ban takes immediate effect after an incident during the 66th minute of Newport's 1-1 draw against York City on Saturday, 17 November.
Match officials did not initially identify the incident during the fixture, but the Football Association (FA) determined after reviewing video evidence that Gwengwe's conduct constituted a breach of the rules. The suspension will force the forward to sit out three upcoming fixtures: away matches at Rotherham United and Cheltenham Town, plus a home game against Chesterfield.
Gwengwe's absence represents a significant blow to Newport's attacking options. The forward, who arrived at the club during the summer transfer window, has been among the team's most prolific performers this season, netting five goals across 10 League Two appearances. His contributions have helped Newport maintain an 11th-place finish in the fourth tier.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenge facing clubs in managing player discipline, particularly when infractions occur away from the immediate view of match officials. The FA's reliance on video review in this case underscores the importance of post-match scrutiny in identifying conduct that may have escaped live detection.
