Will Fish in action against Watford

Defender Will Fish believes Cardiff City must replicate their impressive home performances in away matches if they are to establish themselves as genuine Championship contenders. The Bluebirds have shown a stark contrast between their two environments this season, remaining unbeaten at Cardiff City Stadium while struggling significantly on the road.

Cardiff's home record has been built on attacking prowess and clinical finishing. Their most recent display came on 13 October, when they defeated Watford 5-1, with Jack Moylan scoring twice and Ollie Tanner also finding the net. This performance followed a 3-1 victory over Charlton Athletic in their previous home fixture, demonstrating their capacity to dismantle opponents when conditions suit them.

The contrast with their away record is pronounced. Cardiff have lost four of their five matches on the road this season, a statistic that Fish acknowledges must change if the club is to challenge for promotion. The team has registered the most shots in the division, yet this attacking dominance has not consistently translated into results away from home.

Can Cardiff replicate home form on the road?

Fish believes the pathway forward is clear: transfer the attacking intensity and efficiency shown at home into away performances.

"Definitely. We play good football at home, and I think we blow teams away at times. We got the end product right [against Watford], and it meant we scored five goals. If we can take that into our away performances, I think we will be in a really good place."

The 24-year-old centre-back also acknowledged that Cardiff have not been sufficiently ruthless in converting chances throughout the majority of their matches this season. While possession and shot statistics paint a picture of dominance, the actual execution in front of goal has been inconsistent.

"Everyone is aware of the stats. I think we are highest in possession as well. At the end of the day, you need to score goals and keep clean sheets. As much as stats can be helpful, it's about what happens on the pitch. The amount of goals we score is what really matters."

How is Fish progressing after his injury?

Fish made his first appearance of the season during the Watford match after recovering from hernia surgery that caused him to miss the start of the campaign. His introduction came when Wales international Dylan Lawlor suffered a hamstring injury after just 29 minutes, forcing the defender into action earlier than anticipated.

Fish has not had a full pre-season due to his recovery timeline and acknowledged that he still has work to do before declaring himself completely match-fit. However, he expressed satisfaction with his current condition and his ability to contribute to the team's efforts.

"It's never nice to get injured, especially as we came back for pre-season. In effect, I've not really had a pre-season. I'm almost playing catch-up at the minute. I feel like I've got a long way to go, but it was nice to get out there on Tuesday night and get some minutes into my legs. My injury, you can't help that. It is what it is. I got over it, and I feel like I'm in a good place now, and I'm ready to help the team."

What about Cardiff's defensive record?

One area of concern for Cardiff remains their inability to keep clean sheets since earning promotion back to the Championship. During the Watford victory, the team conceded a late consolation goal despite establishing a commanding 5-0 lead with five minutes remaining. Fish expressed disappointment at this lapse, particularly given the opportunity to record a shutout.

"I was disappointed. At that stage in the game, of course, we could have done better. We were all hoping for the clean sheet, but it was nice to get three points."

The defensive vulnerability will be tested immediately. Cardiff's next fixture takes them to second-place Middlesbrough on 17 October at 12:30 p.m. Middlesbrough, like Cardiff, rank among the division's leading teams for shots on goal and touches in the opposition box, suggesting an attacking contest.

What lies ahead for Cardiff?

The fixture list presents a demanding sequence of challenges. Following the Middlesbrough visit on 17 October, Cardiff are scheduled to host Birmingham City on 24 October, before facing further tests against Wolves, West Ham and Burnley—all teams with recent experience of top-flight football.

Fish is not looking beyond the immediate challenge. He wants Cardiff to make a statement by becoming the first away side to win at the Riverside Stadium this season, an objective that would demonstrate their capacity to perform in hostile environments.

"The games we have got coming up are tough. Every game of football that you play in this league is tough. We will just take it game by game. [Watford] was a good start, and hopefully we can pick up another win in Middlesbrough on Saturday."

Prior to the Watford victory, Cardiff's away form had been particularly troubling. The team lost 1-2 away to Blackburn on 10 October before returning to win 5-1 at home three days later, highlighting the volatility of their performances depending on venue.
