Duncan Ferguson has been appointed manager of Glentoran on a multi-year contract, tasking himself with returning the Irish League club to championship success after a 17-year wait. The 54-year-old former Everton striker, confirmed in the role on Monday, inherits a squad that has struggled to challenge despite significant investment and the adoption of a full-time professional model in recent seasons.
According to BBC Sport, Ferguson has committed to bringing attacking football and defensive solidity to the Oval, where Glentoran currently sit 11 points adrift of leaders Coleraine in the Irish Premiership.
I'll give the club everything and I expect the players to give everything as well,Ferguson said during his unveiling.
Hopefully we can compete with the teams at the top of the league and get a bit closer to them. At the minute we're bit adrift of the top two or three.
What is Ferguson's tactical vision?
The new manager outlined an approach centred on intensity and attacking prowess.
I'll bring a football team that will really run, run and run. I'll push them as hard as I can and set them up tactically well.He identified a specific weakness in the squad's recent performances:
Defensively we have been very good but we've lacked in creating chances so hopefully we can play attacking football.
Ferguson's appointment comes after BBC Sport reported that interim managers Paddy McCourt and Tim McCann had guided the team to four wins and a draw in six league matches before his arrival, stabilising a side that had faltered under previous management.
What is Ferguson's managerial background?
Ferguson brings extensive experience across British and Irish football. As a player, he represented Dundee United and Newcastle United alongside his celebrated spell at Everton, where he became a towering striker. His management career includes spells at Forest Green Rovers and Inverness Caledonian Thistle, where he departed in October 2024 after the club entered administration.
At Everton, Ferguson served as assistant manager under Carlo Ancelotti and Rafael Benitez, two of the club's most decorated recent managers, and held the caretaker role on two occasions. He has been absent from football management for two years before this appointment.
Why did Ferguson choose Glentoran?
Ferguson expressed enthusiasm about returning to active management and confidence in the club's financial backing.
It's a great chance for me to get into football. I've been out of football for two years. I didn't know if was going to get back in or do television work but it's a great chance for me.
He highlighted his rapport with owner Ali Pour as a key factor in accepting the role.
They've got ambition. I spoke to the owner Ali [Pour] and they've got the ambition to get this club back to what it was before. I know they haven't won a title in 17 years. I'm a people person and when I met him we got on - I think we'll get the backing from him as he's backed the club for the last number of years.
The appointment represents a significant moment for Glentoran, who parted company with Declan Devine on 14 September after a difficult start to the season. The club had previously pursued Cliftonville manager Jim Magilton before turning to Ferguson; Magilton opted to remain at Cliftonville.
What is the current state of Glentoran's squad?
Glentoran has invested substantially over the past five transfer windows under owner Ali Pour's stewardship, yet the squad has been described as imbalanced. The club's recent form has shown signs of improvement, with Daniel Larmour's injury-time goal securing a 1–0 victory over Limavady, bringing Glentoran to 13 points from its last 15 matches and moving the club to third in the league.
What lies ahead for Ferguson and Glentoran?
Ferguson's first fixtures will test his ability to close the gap on the league's leading sides. Glentoran are scheduled to host Ballymena United on 24 October at 15:00, followed by a visit to leaders Coleraine on 30 October at 19:45. These matches will provide early indicators of whether Ferguson's appointment signals the beginning of a sustained challenge for the title that has eluded the club since 2009.
