Ben Cabango believes Swansea's "humble" approach is delivering results as the club sits atop the Championship following their comeback victory over Norwich. The Wales defender and club captain, aged 26, has watched his side demonstrate resilience throughout the season, bouncing back from 1-0 deficits on multiple occasions under manager Vitor Matos.
Swansea secured a 2-1 win on 10 October, with Adam Idah scoring against his former club to secure the victory. The triumph left them leading the table on 20 points after nine matches, ahead of Middlesbrough on 18 points and West Ham on 16 points.
"The main thing is we can feel real togetherness and the character,"Cabango said of the squad's mentality.
"I feel like that's the third time I think we've come back from 1-0 nil down this season. I don't think there's ever any panic when we do go one-nil down."
The defensive record underpins Swansea's challenge. After nine league matches, the club had recorded six wins, two draws and one defeat, with 15 goals scored and seven conceded. Their only league loss came away at Southampton.
How is Matos building this confidence?
The manager's philosophy of treating every fixture as a cup final has created an environment where players trust one another and maintain belief even when trailing.
"There's real belief right now in the squad, and we're playing with that confidence, aggression, like constantly, and that comes from the gaffer,"Cabango explained.
"Every game, he's always saying 'treat the next game like the cup final' and we don't look too far ahead. We're a humble squad and just pushing to get better every day."
Iconic former manager John Toshack attended the Norwich match, witnessing the latest demonstration of the team's character. The occasion underscored the significance of Swansea's position in the promotion race, with supporters increasingly excited about their prospects.
What challenges lie ahead?
Swansea face a demanding schedule with back-to-back tests against two sides capable of challenging their leadership. They are scheduled to visit Millwall on Tuesday 13 October 2026, with kick-off at 19:45, before hosting West Ham on Saturday 17 October 2026, with kick-off at 15:00.
Cabango acknowledged the physical demands of the Millwall fixture.
"We know what to expect going to Millwall away. It's always going to be a physical game, demanding game, and the set pieces, the long balls. It's going to be a tough test and a different one to today [against Norwich]. But we're going to obviously recover, prepare for it, and go in with that confidence and belief, like we do."
Millwall won 1–0 away at Preston on 10 October, maintaining their push up the table. West Ham, meanwhile, drew 1–1 with QPR on 9 October before their visit to south Wales, leaving them third in the standings.
How did international duty affect Cabango?
The Swansea captain returned from Nations League action with Wales feeling energised despite a demanding schedule. Wales lost to Portugal and Denmark twice during the break, though they claimed Norway's scalp, with Cabango earning widespread praise for his defensive display against Erling Haaland.
"Four games in two weeks is always going to be hard, and playing against the opposition, you do, it's really intense,"Cabango reflected. He felt confident in his own form and believed the squad shook off any rust from the international break when they faced Norwich.
"We came looking a new team really, and it was real positive to come from a goal behind and get the three points."
Cabango acknowledged the excitement building among supporters but stressed the importance of maintaining focus.
"I can already feel that, to be honest with you. Even the Swans fans [and] us as a team, we obviously are excited. But we've had a real good start. It's given us a great platform to build off, and we've just got to carry on."
