Burnley Target Craig Bellamy in Managerial Search

Craig Bellamy, who began his playing career at Norwich and also represented Coventry, Newcastle, Manchester City, and Liverpool, has become the focus of Burnley's managerial pursuit.

The Clarets have initiated contact with the Football Association of Wales (FAW) as they seek to appoint their former coach to replace Scott Parker.

No agreement has been reached yet, and any appointment would require compensation negotiations.

Bellamy previously served under Vincent Kompany at Turf Moor, contributing to Burnley's promotion in 2023, and was briefly appointed acting head coach following Kompany's departure to Bayern Munich in 2024.

The 46-year-old has two years remaining on his contract with the FAW but may now part ways with Wales midway through his four-year tenure.

Burnley have been searching for a new manager since Parker left by mutual consent in April, shortly after the club's relegation from the Premier League was confirmed.

Bellamy, a former Wales forward, was quickly identified as a candidate to succeed Parker.

Bellamy Addresses Interest Amid Wales Commitments

Before Wales' June friendlies against Ghana and Romania, Bellamy acknowledged receiving interest from club sides but reaffirmed his commitment to Wales.

"Everything's in place, I get completely backed and it's going to give me the opportunity in the next two years to improve again," Bellamy said ahead of Wales' 1-1 draw with Ghana in Cardiff on 2 June.

"Links? I understand it but I don't look too far. I love what I have here.

"I've been offered that elsewhere as well, but I have this here already.

"Wales gave me this opportunity and one or two might not have because I was conscious I haven't managed before. Wales have given me this opportunity and I'm really grateful for that.

"I am ambitious, trust me. I want to earn loads and loads of money but there's a time and now, at this present moment, it just doesn't feel that time."

Prior to the June international camp, FAW officials expressed confidence to Wales that Bellamy would fulfill his contract, which runs until the conclusion of Euro 2028.

Bellamy's Coaching Background and Burnley Connection

Bellamy, who was recently linked with the Celtic managerial position, served as assistant to Kompany during the latter's tenure as Burnley head coach from 2022 to 2024.

Burnley secured the 2022-23 Championship title with 101 points, earning promotion to the Premier League.

However, the club was relegated after the 2023-24 Premier League season. Kompany departed to join Bayern Munich, and Bellamy subsequently left to assume the Wales managerial role.

Under Bellamy's leadership, Wales remained unbeaten in his first nine matches, achieving promotion to Nations League A, where they are set to compete against Portugal, Norway, and Denmark later this year.

Despite this, Wales failed to qualify for the World Cup after losing a penalty shootout in the play-offs against Bosnia-Herzegovina and have won only three of their last eleven matches.

Perspectives on Bellamy's Potential Departure

Bellamy's former Norwich and Wales teammate, Iwan Roberts, commented on Radio Cymru regarding the possibility of Bellamy leaving Wales:

"I'm not sure if it would be a big loss [to Wales] if he did go, because Bellamy still has a lot of questions to answer as Wales boss. He's very inexperienced, but I do see why he'd be a good fit for Burnley."
