Harry Kane looks on

Harry Kane's hopes of becoming the first English Ballon d'Or winner since 2001 were briefly exposed when the award's official website prematurely published articles naming him and several other contenders as victors. The premature disclosure occurred on Monday afternoon, more than four hours before the ceremony was scheduled to take place at London's Palladium Theatre.

According to BBC Sport, an article titled "Harry Kane wins the 2026 Ballon d'Or" began circulating online shortly after 17:15 GMT. The publication sparked immediate confusion among football fans and observers who questioned whether France Football, the award's organising body, had failed to maintain secrecy around the voting results.

How did the leak happen?

Investigation of the Ballon d'Or website revealed that the premature publication was far more widespread than initially apparent. Profiles prepared for multiple nominees had been inadvertently published simultaneously, including pieces about Barcelona's Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappé, both considered leading contenders for the honour. England Football confirmed that the men's shortlist comprises 30 players, with three English representatives competing for the award.

A Ballon d'Or spokesperson addressed the incident by stating:

Some profiles of nominees prepared by BallonDor.com were inadvertently published online. These articles had been prepared for all nominees and should in no way be considered as an indication of the final results or rankings

The articles concerning Kane and Mbappé were removed from the website by 17:40 BST. Similar premature publications also appeared for women's award contenders, including London City Lionesses' Alexia Putellas and Barcelona's Ewa Pajor.

What is the voting process?

The Ballon d'Or voting mechanism involves 100 journalists who each rank their top ten players. According to DAZN, voters award 15 points for their first-place selection, descending to one point for tenth place. The voting concluded at the end of September, meaning the results had been finalised well before Monday's ceremony.

Why is London hosting the ceremony?

The 2026 Ballon d'Or awards represent a historic shift for the prestigious honour. ESPN reported that this marks the first occasion the ceremony has been held outside Paris, with London's Palladium Theatre selected as the venue for the star-studded event.

When will the winners be announced?

The official announcement of both the men's and women's Ballon d'Or winners was scheduled for Monday, 26 October, at 20:00 BST at the London Palladium. Kane will discover whether his record-breaking season has earned him football's most prestigious individual award at that time, with the accidental publication serving as an embarrassing reminder of the challenge in maintaining confidentiality around such high-profile announcements.
