Aston Villa have agreed to sell defender Ezri Konsa to Arsenal in a deal worth more than £50m, with the England international set to undergo a medical before his move to Emirates Stadium is finalised.

According to Sky Sports, the fee has been settled at £51m after Villa had initially sought £60m for the 28-year-old, while other reporting suggests the agreement could be worth as much as €60m including add-ons.

How did the transfer come together?

Arsenal's pursuit of Konsa had appeared to stall earlier this month when their opening offer of around £30m fell well short of Villa's £60m valuation, prompting the Gunners to explore an alternative move for Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Jarell Quansah. Talks between the two clubs resumed last week, and Arsenal ultimately refocused their efforts on Konsa, striking an agreement that clears the way for him to join before the end of the transfer window.

Konsa still had two years remaining on his existing Aston Villa contract, according to Sky Sports, underlining the scale of the fee Arsenal have had to pay to prise him away from Villa Park.

What has Konsa achieved during his time at Villa?

Konsa joined Aston Villa in July 2019 and has gone on to make 286 appearances for the club across seven seasons. Last season he featured 48 times in all competitions, scoring twice and adding an assist, as Unai Emery's side won the Europa League and finished fourth in the Premier League to secure a return to Champions League football for 2026-27.

He was also a mainstay of England's run to third place at the World Cup, playing in every match of the tournament. Villa boss Emery subsequently gave Konsa four weeks off, meaning the defender has not featured at all in pre-season, including a 2-1 defeat by Paris St-Germain in the Uefa Super Cup.

Speaking after Villa's final pre-season friendly against Borussia Monchengladbach, Emery addressed the continued absence of Konsa alongside goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and forward Ollie Watkins:

They are joining us after this match.

Why is Villa's squad changing so significantly this summer?

Villa's willingness to sell Konsa reflects the wider financial pressures shaping their summer business. Despite winning the Europa League and qualifying for the Champions League, the club has had to sell several key players to comply with Uefa and Premier League financial regulations. Morgan Rogers was sold to Chelsea for a club-record £117m, a sale that followed earlier reports that Rogers himself had been eyeing a move to Arsenal before Villa had insisted they intended to keep him.

Midfielder Youri Tielemans, who like Rogers scored in the Europa League final win over Freiburg in May, has since joined Manchester United, while left-back Lucas Digne moved to Paris St-Germain with Atletico Madrid's Matteo Ruggeri brought in as his replacement. Martinez is also expected to leave before the transfer window closes, adding to the sense that Villa's squad is being reshaped far more quickly than would normally happen across a single window.

Villa have also been active in the market for potential reinforcements, having previously pursued Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi amid competition from Newcastle United, and more recently weighing a possible loan move for Real Madrid forward Endrick as they look to strengthen the squad amid the outgoings.

Captain John McGinn insisted last week that the club retains the same structures and values that underpinned its recent success, pointing to Villa's performance in the defeat by PSG in the Super Cup as evidence that standards have not slipped despite the turnover of players.

What happens next?

Konsa's availability for Arsenal's Premier League opener hinges on the timing of his medical and registration. According to Sky Sports, he would need to be registered by midday on Thursday to be eligible to face Coventry on Friday. Villa, meanwhile, begin their own season away at Brighton in four days' time, with further squad changes possible before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.
