Dr Anna Morris has claimed three gold medals at the Track World Championships in Shanghai, cementing her position among the world's elite cyclists despite having put her medical career on hold five years ago. According to BBC Sport, Morris won titles in the team pursuit, omnium and madison alongside teenage debutant Erin Boothman, making her the first woman to secure all three events at a single championships since women's madison was introduced in 2017.

Morris' Instagram biography still reads "career as a doctor on pause" — a break that was originally intended to last just one year. Now 31, she has transformed from a junior doctor watching the Tokyo Olympics in a hospital to one of the sport's most dominant figures, with no immediate plans to return to medicine.

A Remarkable Rise to the Top

Morris had never set foot in a velodrome before turning 20, yet her ascent has been extraordinary. She won the world individual pursuit title in 2024 before she had even claimed the British national championship, a sequence that underscores her rapid development. According to cycling analysis from IDLP Cycling, Morris now holds seven world titles across her career.

Speaking to BBC Sport Wales after her three victories, Morris reflected on her achievements:

It's pretty high up there with one of the best years on my bike so far. There's such strong depth in the women's field at the moment. There's some really good names in the field. You never know how you're going to fare up against them, so to come away with three golds, I'm still struggling to find the words.

Her success at the World Championships follows a strong summer, when she won two golds and a bronze at the Commonwealth Games. The madison victory, achieved with Boothman, was particularly significant given that Morris and Boothman won with 40 points, seven ahead of France, with Japan taking bronze with 18 points. Boothman, 19, is a former junior world champion in the madison, while Morris had only begun racing the event in September 2025, making their partnership a compelling blend of experience and emerging talent.

What Drives Her Success?

Morris attributes her progression to sustained effort and the environment within British Cycling.

It's down to hard work and consistency over time. Being part of British Cycling, you're among the best in the world and you can really learn off that. And I think that, when you enjoy what you do, when you're passionate about what you do and you put the hard work in, one thing's just led to the next. I think there's still more to come, hopefully.

Her competitive drive extends beyond her own performances. At the World Championships, she chose not to compete in the individual pursuit — one of her strongest events — to allow team-mates Millie Couzens and Josie Knight to race, with both securing medals. Couzens took gold and Knight claimed silver, demonstrating the depth of British talent.

British Cycling's Strength in Depth

Great Britain's performance at the World Championships underscores the nation's continued dominance in track cycling. Great Britain finished atop the medal table with 12 medals: six golds, three silvers and three bronzes, despite facing challenges including the withdrawal of top male sprinter Matt Richardson amid an alleged misconduct investigation.

Morris acknowledged the competitive strength within the British squad:

It is hard. You could probably field a few different teams that could all get the same result. So it is difficult when it comes down to selection, but as a team it's such a good place to be in. You're trying to be the best in the world at something so to have that depth and strength in your squad is just amazing, getting to train with each other, and it definitely contributes to their overall team performance.

The World Championships represented the first qualification step toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where Morris has already set her sights. With at least another two years before the Games, her medical career will remain on pause as she pursues Olympic glory.
