Marcus Trescothick has expressed his desire to continue as part of Stephen Fleming's coaching team once the incoming head coach formally takes charge of England's Test side. Trescothick is currently serving as interim head coach for the three-Test series against Pakistan, which began on 19 August 2026, and secured a winning start at Headingley on Friday with Joe Root's side emerging victorious.
Fleming has been formally appointed England men's Test head coach, though he will not assume full responsibility until after the Pakistan series concludes. His tenure is expected to begin with England's winter tour of South Africa starting in December 2026.
When asked whether he anticipated remaining within the Test group, Trescothick outlined his ambitions:
I'd love to carry on, of course. First and foremost, I want to be involved in all formats of the game because it's a wonderful place to be, working with the best and seeing England cricketers do well. But that's not really for me to judge, so I'll wait and see what happens.
Trescothick served as an assistant coach during Brendon McCullum's tenure before stepping into the interim role for the Pakistan series. The ECB has yet to formally announce the full coaching staff that Fleming will work alongside, though discussions are already underway regarding potential appointments.
Has Fleming approached potential coaching staff members?
Fleming has been in contact with former Australia batter Mike Hussey about the possibility of joining the Test set-up as batting coach. Hussey confirmed the approach while speaking to Fox Sports News, describing the initial conversation as informal.

We get on really well and have worked a lot together. It was just a bit of a passing comment, really, saying: 'Look, what do you reckon? Would you think about being the batting coach?' I have not been able to give it any thought whatsoever. I've just got back from the UK myself with coaching in the Hundred. So I haven't thought about it at all. Would I? I wouldn't say never to anything really, whether it'd be England, whether it be Australia, India, Pakistan, South Africa. I just love the coaching side of the game and just to be able to work with different players.
Hussey brings relevant experience in the England setup, having previously worked as a consultant when the team won the T20 World Cup in Australia four years ago. His openness to exploring opportunities across multiple cricket boards reflects his enthusiasm for the coaching profession.
How is Fleming staying involved during the Pakistan series?
Despite not officially taking charge until after the Pakistan Tests, Fleming has maintained regular communication with both Test captain Joe Root and Trescothick to ensure continuity in England's approach. The incoming coach has been deliberately hands-on during the planning phase while allowing the interim leadership to execute their vision.
Trescothick described the nature of their ongoing dialogue:
We've been exchanging messages every day just to keep topping up on what we're trying to do. He wanted to touch base, see how things were planned out, how everyone had trained and getting the group back together.
Fleming's involvement during this transitional period reflects a deliberate strategy to maintain momentum in England's Test revival.
Probably the most poignant part, really, when we were planning during the Hundred and working out how it was all going to work, he was adamant that me and Joe take it on and just run with what we feel is right to try and get the group back in shape, with a few pointers on what he wanted and how he could see his style being implemented within that group.
What lies ahead for England's Test programme?
England's second Test against Pakistan is scheduled for 27–31 August 2026 at Lord's, followed by the third and final Test of the series at Edgbaston from 9–13 September 2026. These matches will provide Trescothick with further opportunity to demonstrate his leadership credentials while Fleming observes from a distance, preparing for his formal debut in the South African winter tour.
