Stokes Contemplates Future After Nightclub Incident
Joe Root will captain England in the upcoming second Test against New Zealand after Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were excluded from the squad due to breaching the team curfew while celebrating their victory in the first Test on Sunday night.
Stokes, who serves as the team's full-time captain, is currently taking time to evaluate his future following the incident, which has reignited discussions about the perceived unprofessional culture within the team. Reports indicate that Stokes spent Wednesday in meetings with his agent and advisers. Atkinson will also miss the match, which is set to take place at the Oval, the home ground of the Surrey seamer.
“The England & Wales Cricket Board can confirm that, given the ongoing investigation, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson have not been made available for selection for the second Test against New Zealand,”
“Yorkshire batter will lead the team as interim captain.”
The absence of Stokes and Atkinson, combined with Brydon Carse's hand injury sustained during a training session in April—which has sidelined the 30-year-old since the conclusion of the Ashes in January—means England will be without three of their four frontline seamers.
Consequently, England is expected to include two seamers in their lineup next week. Likely candidates are Sonny Baker, who was close to making his Test debut in the opening match of the series, and Jofra Archer, who returns to the squad after participating in the Indian Premier League with Rajasthan Royals and taking a brief break in Barbados. Additionally, Surrey’s Matthew Fisher has been named in the squad.
Selection Challenges for England Coach Brendon McCullum
England coach Brendon McCullum faces the decision of whether to strengthen the batting lineup, which would require omitting Shoaib Bashir. Bashir featured in the Lord’s Test but was not called upon to bowl. In his only previous Test at the Oval, against Sri Lanka in 2024, he took one wicket for 65 runs.
Choosing to bolster batting would leave the team without a specialist frontline spinner; however, both Joe Root and Jacob Bethell could provide spin bowling options if necessary. Should this be the case, Somerset’s James Rew is likely to make his debut, having been the reserve batter in the squad for the series opener. Essex’s Jordan Cox has also been added to the group.
