Host nation Scotland won eight medals in the space of five chaotic hours on Wednesday, including two golds, to take their Commonwealth Games tally in Glasgow to 23. Swimmers Angharad Evans and Keanna MacInnes both won an individual medal and a relay prize, Toni Shaw also succeeded in the pool at Tollcross, Melanie Woods claimed gold on the track at Scotstoun, Steven MacKenzie earned a surprise bronze in the field, and both the men’s 3x3 basketball team and the women’s wheelchair equivalent ended the evening on the podium.
The total leaves Scotland on 23 medals overall as the Games passed the halfway mark, with nine golds and seven silvers and bronzes respectively. It was also Scotland’s best return in a single day since nine medals were claimed on the final day of the Birmingham edition in 2022.
How did Scotland collect so many medals in such a short time?
Scotland’s medals arrived in quick succession after a relatively quiet day. The first came from the men’s 3x3 basketball team just before 17:00 BST, before three more were added within five minutes a couple of hours later.
The women’s wheelchair 3x3 basketball team won silver, Evans claimed her second gold and third medal of the Games in the 200m breaststroke, and Woods took gold in the women’s T54 1500m. Shaw then added bronze in the women’s S9 100m freestyle, while MacInnes was edged into second place in the women’s 200m butterfly to collect her second individual silver of the meet.
Around the same time, MacKenzie jumped to long jump bronze, before the medal haul was completed in the pool when Evans and MacInnes joined Katie Shanahan and Evie Davis to win silver in the women’s 4x100m medley.
