Silver was a belated 30th birthday present for Olivia Breen as Team Wales captain earned the first Welsh medal of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in athletics. Breen took silver in the T38 100m final with a season's best of 12.86 seconds on her 30th birthday eve, finishing behind England's Sophie Hahn in the race for gold.
How did Breen secure Wales' first athletics medal?
Breen, the defending champion, edged England's Maddie Down in a photo-finish to claim silver and deliver Wales' first athletics medal of the Games. It was the fourth Commonwealth medal of her career, and Wales have now won seven Games medals in Glasgow, made up of two silvers and five bronze.
The result came after a season in which Breen battled concussions and injuries, and she said the medal meant more because of that challenge. Her run in the final followed a strong heat performance in the morning, and she said she had saved herself for the evening race.
"I'm really happy with the performance - I kept myself together, kept my form and it was a really good start and can't ask for any more, it felt really good.
"I'm so happy that I got a medal today, it was obviously going to be a really tight race, I was determined, I left it all on the track.
"That wait around [for confirmation of silver] was nerve-wracking, but it was amazing and I'm really happy with how I ran the heat this morning and saved myself for tonight.
What does the medal mean for Team Wales?
Breen said it was encouraging to see Team Wales performing well across several sports as she returned to her captaincy duties after the race. She highlighted strong displays from the swimmers and gymnasts and said there were still more opportunities to come for the team in Glasgow.
"It's really nice to see how well Team Wales are doing," she said.
"The swimmers are doing really well, the gymnasts and there's many more to come and I'm really excited to go and support the team tomorrow and go and see what Wales can do."
Wales' medal tally in Glasgow now stands at seven, with Breen's silver adding to the two silvers and five bronze already secured.
