Trump Launches America250 Festivities with Rally on the National Mall

President Donald Trump inaugurated weeks of events commemorating America's 250th anniversary with a rally on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday evening.

The occasion included a flyover by some of the nation's most iconic fighter jets and stealth bombers, performances by military bands, a rendition of "God Bless the USA" by Lee Greenwood, and a speech delivered by the president.

"Tonight, as we stand on the edge of our 250th year of independence, I am thrilled to declare that America is back," Trump stated during the rally.

Trump declared himself the headliner for the event after several musicians withdrew their participation, citing concerns over the politicization of the celebrations.

A variety of events have been organized to mark America's 250th birthday, including Wednesday's rally associated with "The Great American State Fair" on the National Mall.

Organizers assert that these festivities are intended to honor the anniversary; however, some events, particularly those funded by an entity supportive of Trump, have raised questions about potential politicization of the celebrations.

America250, one of the planning groups, was established by Congress a decade ago to coordinate nonpartisan events. Freedom 250, another organization involved, was created by Trump and operates as a public-private partnership.

Congress has reportedly allocated $150 million (£112 million) in federal funding for the birthday celebrations, with Freedom 250 contributing millions more.

Both America250 and Freedom 250 are expected to host major events as part of the commemoration. Below is an overview of key activities.

American State Fair

A prominent feature of the 250th celebration is a large-scale 16-day State Fair.

The fair runs from June 25 to July 10 along the National Mall, stretching from the U.S. Capitol to the Washington Monument.

President Trump is headlining the fair's opening ceremony with a rally.

According to Freedom 250, which is organizing the event, all 56 U.S. states and territories will be represented in the exposition.

Among the planned festivities was a concert series titled the Great American State Fair concert series, which was canceled after several scheduled performers withdrew.

Artists including Martina McBride, The Commodores, Young MC, and Bret Michaels cited the event's affiliation with the White House as their reason for withdrawing. Some performers indicated they were unaware of the connection to Freedom 250.

Following these withdrawals, Trump canceled the planned musical acts and announced via social media that he would host "the Greatest Rally, EVER!" He described it as the "Rally to end all Rallies" and indicated that some artists would still perform.

"We don't want singers with no talent, but big fees to put you to sleep, we've told them all to stay home," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "All we want is you, me, a few speakers, and the Greatest Music ever played, the same Music you have listened to for years!"

On Tuesday afternoon, country singer Alexis Wilkins, who is the longtime girlfriend of FBI Director Kash Patel, announced she would perform at Wednesday's event.

UFC Freedom 250

Trump celebrated both his 80th birthday and America's 250th anniversary with an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event held on the White House lawn—the first professional sporting event ever hosted at the presidential residence.

Thousands of mixed martial arts fans, including Trump, watched American fighter Justin Gaethje defeat Spanish-Georgian opponent Ilia Topuria to win the lightweight championship in the main event.

Other administration officials attended, alongside UFC chief Dana White, a longtime friend of Trump. During the evening, the crowd sang happy birthday to the president.

The White House stated that Freedom 250 planned the event, but UFC covered the expenses. Dana White confirmed this in January to the Sports Business Journal, saying, "We're eating the whole thing." The event was free to attend but required tickets.

A federal lawsuit filed on June 6 sought to halt the event but was unsuccessful.

4 July Fireworks Display

Across the United States on July 4, fireworks illuminate the skies. In Washington, D.C., an annual large-scale display is organized by the National Park Service.

This year, the 40-minute fireworks show will be managed by Freedom 250, the Trump-founded public-private partnership responsible for several events.

The display reportedly will include over 860,000 fireworks and last approximately 40 minutes. By comparison, a typical fireworks show includes around 10,000 fireworks and lasts less than 20 minutes.

Freedom 250 requested Pyrotecnico, the company producing the show, to surpass the Philippines' 2016 record for the largest fireworks display in history, according to USA Today.

Outside Washington

Celebrations for America's semiquincentennial are not limited to the nation's capital; events are planned nationwide.

In New York City, a ball will drop in Times Square on July 4, similar to the traditional New Year's Eve ball drop.

Unlike New Year's Eve, the ball will drop eight times to mark midnight in each of the U.S. time zones, with each drop featuring a unique design, according to America250.

In Philadelphia, a time capsule will be buried and remain sealed until 2276, as stated by America250.

"When it is opened in 2276, we want future generations to have a clear, authentic window into who we were at 250 – what we valued, what we built, and how we saw ourselves as a nation," said Rosie Rios, Chair of America250.

Across the country in Los Angeles, America250 will host a concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum featuring musical artists and an audience of up to 50,000 attendees.

Additionally, block parties are planned in cities such as Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Reflecting Pool Renovations

In preparation for the anniversary, Trump initiated several beautification projects throughout Washington, D.C.

Some projects have been criticized as ostentatious or unnecessary, while others have received praise from local residents.

One focus has been the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which stretches 2,030 feet (620 meters) between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.

In April, workers began painting the historic pool blue.

Trump stated that the restoration and painting would resolve a leaking issue, with the paint expected to last 40 to 50 years, ensuring no leaks or other problems.

However, after completion, the blue paint started peeling and floating on the water's surface, attracting criticism. Additionally, blooming algae developed, prompting officials to drain the pool again. Trump attributed these issues to vandalism.

The painting project faced legal challenges from a nonprofit organization seeking to halt the work, arguing that Trump disregarded laws protecting historical landmarks.

Before a court order was issued, Trump posted on Truth Social on June 3 that a final protective coat was to be applied that day, adding that "the water will start flowing, shortly thereafter."
