Britney Spears Faces DUI Charge in California
Prosecutors in California have formally charged Britney Spears with a criminal offence following her arrest last month for allegedly driving under the influence.
The pop icon is accused of one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Authorities reported that Spears was apprehended on March 4 while driving her BMW "erratically at a high rate of speed" on a highway in southern California.
Following the incident, Spears, aged 44, reportedly admitted herself to a rehabilitation treatment center. Her representatives described the event as "completely inexcusable."
Court Proceedings and Statements
Her arraignment is set for next Monday morning; however, she is not obligated to attend in person due to the minor nature of the charge.
The charge was filed by the Ventura County District Attorney's Office on Thursday.
"Whether or not Ms Spears will appear at the hearing will be a decision made between her and her attorney," the district attorney's office stated.
