A 77-year-old man has been convicted and imprisoned for sexually assaulting a boy and subjecting four other children to severe physical abuse spanning nearly three decades. Archibald Thorburn targeted youngsters placed in care at locations across Edinburgh between 1963 and 1992, with the High Court hearing evidence of systematic cruelty that the presiding judge described as "truly shocking."
Thorburn, from Edinburgh, was found guilty on 14 charges following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh. Jurors heard testimony from victims—now adults—who recounted repeated assaults, sexual abuse, and psychological torment inflicted during their vulnerable years in institutional care.
The first victim's ordeal
The boy who became Thorburn's first victim was just six years old when the abuse began in the summer of 1963. Now aged 69, the man testified that he shared a room with Thorburn at a house in Bath Street, Portobello, where he was placed in care alongside other children.
He described being forced to perform a sexual act that caused him to vomit, then being made to clean up the mess while Thorburn warned him to keep silent, saying it was "our secret." The witness recalled his fear of Thorburn from the moment he arrived. "I was scared of him from day one," he said. "He had a temper on him. He would just lash out."
The abuse continued for nearly five years, from July 1963 until April 1968. During this period, Thorburn also subjected the boy to brutal physical violence. Jurors heard how Thorburn repeatedly slapped, punched and kicked the child when he was six years old. He struck him with a spirit level and forced him to run around a garden with a rope around his neck while carrying tins filled with concrete.
When the children failed to complete their chores before school, they were beaten with slippers, shoes or belts. The witness said this punishment was routine in the household.
Abuse of other children
Between June 1965 and March 1968, Thorburn subjected a girl—nine years old when the abuse began—to violent physical and sexual assaults. During the same period, he forced another eight-year-old girl to endure scalding hot and freezing cold baths as "punishment." He also compelled her to stare at a photograph of him for hours at a time, striking her if she looked away.
In the mid-1970s, Thorburn preyed on a 13-year-old boy, subjecting him to violent physical assaults over three years. On one occasion, he brandished a hot poker at the boy and threatened to brand him with it.
The court also heard that between July 1963 and January 1971, Thorburn "cruelly and unnaturally" treated another boy by repeatedly slapping, punching and kicking him on the head and body. He shaved the youngster's head and forced him to watch as he punished other children.
Thorburn also subjected his own father to violence on various occasions between 1965 and April 1985, repeatedly punching and kicking him.
In one particularly cruel incident, Thorburn hid puppies belonging to one girl, told her they had gone missing, and forced her to search for them.
The judge's assessment
Judge Michael O'Grady KC delivered a scathing assessment of Thorburn's character and actions.
"The complainers who gave evidence in this case are no longer young. But they were once children. They were rejected, damaged, unhappy and bewildered. All this you must have known. We now know what you proved to be to them; a petty tyrant, a torturer, a sadist and a sexual predator."
The judge said the children had suffered "unimaginable" ordeals at Thorburn's hands.
"You are a cruel and wicked man who robbed them of what remained of an already blighted childhood. The damage you have done is incalculable and all too obvious."
Judge O'Grady also warned Thorburn of what lay ahead.
"Such unforgivable behaviour has—at least in your case—a reckoning. And as you will understand that will be in the form of a significant sentence of imprisonment."
What happens next
Thorburn was remanded in custody pending background reports. According to court records, the case was scheduled for a hearing on 31 August 2026 at the High Court in Edinburgh. The case is listed under reference SCS/2025-069118, identifying it as a High Court criminal matter. Sentencing will take place later this year, with the judge having already indicated it will be substantial.
Defence advocate Brian McConnachie KC reserved his mitigation arguments until the sentencing hearing.
